Could it be Mani?

I'm actually starting to agree with many of the fans on this board who think it could be about some of his fans.

i think it was originally written about mayte.

it could be more about the composite of similar experiences than it is about one specific person.

Different experinces, different women.. Could be Mani. Maybe he's tired of her being suspicious, worrying about what people say and giving him a "hard time" when love doesn't need a "wish list" and all..
Don't really think about fans... So we're giving him ultimatums and smiling at his friends when we really hate them?...

Let's see, Smiling at friends when we really hate them... Larry Graham comes to mind as the main one. Anybody boo him when Prince introduces him on stage? No everybody cheers and claps. But he's aware of the bile we spit on these boards.

I thought, on my own, before reading it here, that it might be about his fans.

I have no guess, but that line about "stop worryin' about what people say / they aint' gon' stop anyway," made me knod in agreement.

I totally feel him on that one.

I reckon Love is about his fans, but I reckon the message is something slightly different.

I reckon he wants to tell us to form our own opinions rather than allowing ourselves to be influenced by other people.

I would reckon someone like Prince would be mature enough to understand that everyone is entitled to their opinion, as long as it is their own and not influenced by others. The song seems to be a dig at the haters and the fans who let themselves be influenced by the critics, like those who stopped following when he changed his name.
