Yes, we know you are both of those things. Tell me, can you post a comment without including one of those little faces? Or are you as incapable of that as you are of intelligent thought & relevant commentary?

I understand Prince's reasons for not particpating, but I think his non-particpation (along with a few other weird things he did in 1985) contributed to a Prince "backlash" that year.In 1984,he was on top of the world but by '85,he started receiving alot of negative criticism. On Saturday Night Live,Billy Crystal did a spoof of the 'We Are The World' session and he dressed up like Prince singing "I Am The World".Many people thought he was a self-obsessed,stuck up rock star who only cared about himself.

It seems to me that Prince would have like to help Americans... but this whole help everyone before you help yourself thing didn't look to appealing to him.

...and it was a fucking corny song... damn, Prince would have looked like a buffoon singing that tripe.

Pretty much... It's a great song, and if you take the lack of worldly knowledge in stride(Just as much hunger here at home? Helllooo!), it's sort of charming as a testament to one's... well, immaturity.

you're welcome... I'm sure someone here has a copy of the show. I do too, but since I live in Europe I use the PAL encoding system which makes the matter a bit more complicated (although not hopeless)... besides as I remember, the show is translated into my mother tongue so it would be of no use for you.. sorry

After seeing how uncomfortable (awesome and completely unique, but uncomfortable) Sheila E. looked in the video, I remember thinking that I was so glad Prince wasn't in it. That whole video was so shmarmy and Prince was such a breath of fresh air at the time that it was best he wasn't there.

Thanks for this thread. I'd never heard that Prince didn't do the UATW vid. because so many legends would be there and he was too shy story. I'd always heard he had a scheduling conflict and could not make it to the recording.

GOOD POINT, Dredd..

"Hello" has always been 1 of my favorite "b-sides," musically & lyrically.

It was totally his choice to participate- or not- in that collaboration. Frankly, I don't think he missed much in not taking part. Anyone can criticize Prince for not participating if they want, but really, the decision to not participate was totally within his "individualist" mentality at that time..

Hello is the bomb diggidy and always has been from day one until now. W&L's vocals are excellent especially Lisas opening Hello. God I miss that voice. It sounds like the avant purple Revolution that Prince spoke of having in the vault. Of course the only reason Prince didnt sing on We Are The World is because he didnt want to sing somoene elses song, especially MJ's at the time. I remember the reports of him not bothering going to the studio with the other celebrities an instead opting to go to Carlos n Charlies on the Sunset Strip which is where his bodyguards (friends)got into a scuffle with the photogs. The ending coda speech of shoes and cruel words are the shit...you could always use the line when someone is fuckin up somehow or fuckin with you.."come now wouldnt life be a little better with a pair of new shoes?". The long version is essential listening.

"As regards to hungry children our record stands tall but there's just as much hunger here at home"

Isn't this just a comparison of two bad scenarios A la the Slavery/Holocaust line which offended so many on "Muse 2 The Pharoah?"

Why not just give USA For Africa it's moment in spotlight without bringing it down to a comparison?

"4 The tears In Your Eyes" is MUCH better in live version by the way, the version on "USA for Africa" is too short and dinky.

P.S." Our BREAKFAST stands tall"? WTF? lol

The reason for those lyrics is because he had to say them in defense due to the media making him out to be callous for not participating. So Prince basically said "hey--were against hungry children too ya know and we have time and time again given to the cause...you just never knew about it,...so hush". He wasnt comparing two bad scenarios and he wasnt trying to take the spotlight away from USA For Africa...he made a commentary to his predicament on a B-Side. (BTW I remember a commentary in a magazine saying that Jesse Johnsons Free World was a better critics answer record than Hello was. He may have been right, musically. Nothing can touch Free World)

P.S." Our BREAKFAST stands tall"? WTF? lol

I thought that was cute lol

I always took the lyric to belittle African charity support when USA poverty exists in it's own right. Down to interpretation I guess.

"Breakfast" has to be one of the classic misheard Prince lyrics. Good idea for future thread perhps...

Dont get me wrong...he does mean that "hey, we have hunger here and Ive been doing my thing about the problem for years..." but he only came at it from that standpoint because basically...muthafuckas were sweatin him. So he was backed in a corner and spoke up maybe in a defensive manner.IMHO of course.

My how times have changed... Now Prince can barely sell more records than Huey Lewis and he is still perceived as a self-obsessed,stuck up rock star who only cares about himself. lol
