"Fury", SNL performance

I know he wasnt lip syncing and he was playing the guitar but there were parts where there were guitar sounds when he wasnt playing, anyone know whats up with that?

Give examples - timings (and, if possible, linked with lyrics) when you think he wasn't playing.

There are certain guitar effects processors that when in use, they take a few seconds of someting U played and loop it back 2 U. What Prince used was probably a delay pedal. That probably doesn't make much sense, but I'm a guitar player and I use the same effects. But it's difficult 2 explain! Maybe a fellow guitar player can elaborate/co-sign with me...

Yeah, I play guitar too and even as a guitar player it is some times incredibly difficult to match the sounds to Prince's movements. He is lightning fast, he uses many effects, and he is a hell of a lot talented more than I am -- he's doing things with his fingers I certainly can't do as well.

I do some boxing and I have to slow down video to actually see what some fighters are doing. Same with Prince's guitar playing. Believe it, he's doing it; we just have a little trouble matching the movements with the sounds.

at the very end of the performance and "will this song have a happy ending", theres sounds like hes going up and down the guitar but if you watch closely hes not

I would think, from what I understand of the question, the perfect example would be at the end of the song where Prince walks off stage, but his guitar keeps making a sound "playing".

It is done with a series of guitar peddles, that creates and echo, or a loop, through the electronic singnal to the amp.
News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so.
You have those internalized issues because you want to, you like to, stop.

He's using pedal effects on both those occasions.

For example, you can see him at the end of the performance look down to set the effect before he lowers his guitar.

Man, I noticed the SAME thing and commented to my fiance about it at the time. Something struck me as out of sync. Maybe he's just that good w/ the distortions/pedals, but YES, I know what you're talking about.

Also he is using his trem bar, which basically releases the strings a little bit so it the sound will drop. You can see him pushing back toward his body slowly so that you get that sound like he is doing a long slow pick slide (sort of). I can't really do it well but I understand it.

You know, there was one part in the third chorus, right after the middle solo, where he's playing that Bb-A-Gb part saying, "Ahhhh...ahhhhh...ahhhh". The second "Ahhh...Ahhh...Ahhh" sounds way different from the first time. It's at 2:50 in the video.

I didn't think Prince was in very good vocal form that night. Prince's singing on "BLB" was actually very sub-par - he sounded flat and off-key for most of it. Regardless, "Fury" was still the best thing I've ever seen on TV.

Should maybe be on a new thread but I'm shy - Does anyone else think Fury is directed at Wendy and Lisa? The first time I listened to it on the CD it dawned on me straight away?

Wow. Has the boxing ruined or affected your playing? I had the same problem. Could not work out and practice near the same time of day because I would be too pumped or too exhausted.

Interesting. Never experienced or heard of that. Guitar playing always seems to unwind and relax me.

I wish I could play as effortlessly as Prince. He peels off licks and sounds with such ease. At times it really does look like he isn't even playing the instrument.

It is called a "Tremolo" paddle I have one..you can make the wave on there deep to shallow and fast to slow. Prince has it on fast and not to deep somewhere in the mid to deep area during the middle of the song and at the end when he walks off the stage...Hope this helps!!! Peace cool

Rockability

Prince uses the absolute best effects and the best equiptment. You can find a link here to it at the org.

He has a row of pedals. You notice during Fury he turns his hand over and muffles the strings. Basically guys, Prince has learned a lot and you can attribute tons to Hendrix among others.

What do you think Mr. Hendrix would be doing with todays electric guitar tools?

If you still don't believe me, visit guitar forums on Prince's performance. They are the most entertaining with quality quotes. My favorite was "I felt like I just got hit by a truck made of rock."
