Why do you people focus on triviality when there are so many more pressing questions? For One: Did Prince have a backup lollypop? What would he have done if Quincy had managed to get his lips around lollypop #1 ('cause he was certainly going for it). Gonna have to slo-mo that so see if there was actual contact. Why do you like playing around with my narrow scope of reality? - Stupify

Triviality aside, I thik it woulda been some high-heeled high-kicks jumpin' off. And looking at the video, I keep forgettin' Micheal and Prince were on the same stage! I'm not one of those P vs. MJ cats, but I do find it interesting that this is prolly one of the only times we'll actually see 'em together. (James Brown at the Wiltern in L.A. doesn't count).

I don't see him. I think he may believe that Sheila E. is MJ. She's kinda sportin' his old school look in that video. BTW, this is one of my least favorite Prince moments in unfortunate recorded history. What a fucking asshole he was to stand up there and mock all of those other artists. After I watched that, I couldn't listen to any Prince music for almost a whole hour.

You so have a point! Prince was still being true to how he felt in 85 when the song first came out - that he didn't want to sing, but would gladly write a song instead (4 the Tears In Your Eyes).

And does anyone notice that Wendy Melvoin joined the group singalong toward the end, in the back of the stage?

That song was corney as hell. I'm with Prince on this one.

It would be a waste for prince's talent to sing in that song.
I think he just judged he was 2 good vocally to sing in that song. Just my 2 cents. Btw. Cut him some slack, at least he was there.

I didn't know about that incident until I started visiting the org in 2004.
Today is my first time seeing it. Is that Nona Gaye standing next to Prince ? If so, he comes up to her kneecaps. But seriously, P was an ass for doing what he did. I can't believe he pulled a stunt like that. [Edited 3/31/06 10:01am]

But I just remember thinking "I know he's not gonna sing that corny ass song". Glad he didn't, but he should've just stayed off the stage.

But yeah, don't go on stage if you're not gonna sing.

Anyone notice that when Prince waves at the crowd, it looks like he's telling them to sit down and shut up? He's hilarious with that lollypop. I wonder if it was cherry or strawberry. Ohhh...and did it have gum inside. _________________________________________

Everybody's looking at this all wrong. He was just trying to find out how many licks it takes to get to the tootsie roll center of a tootsie roll pop. But because he had to take it out when Q sprung the microphone at him, Prince lost count. Now the world may never know. Thanks alot, Quince.

I think its a great clip. You really must have guts to do something like that between all those popular artists, and before a TV audience of millions.
I think it was his way of objecting to how the 'showbizz' deals with the poverty problem, i guess he is thinking something like 'youre singing this song with all those fake, cheery smiles on your faces, when youre not really caring about the subject, or at least, not handling the subject in a proper way, Dont forget it are mostly rich millionaires on stage there showing how much they care, putting big smiles on, declaring themselves as some kind of saints' I must say i aint against the original release of this song in 1984, it was for a good purpose, and to raise as much money as possible, but i object to the fact they are celebrating the 10th anniversary. It should have stayed a one-off thing, by celebrating there own 'good deed' from 10 years earlier, they are making a fool of themselves. I mean, the fact that Prince is wearing that extremely yellow suit, sucking on a lollie, and purposely not singing, is in my opinion about him 'acting' like a rich, spoiled superstar, and with acting i mean, its a sarcastic pose, to take the piss out of those 'shiny, happy, smiling, saintly people' around him

that is a funny clip. Yeah, that lollipop and quincy bit is very, very funny.
And prince's gay wave at the end too He made quicny look like a fool. Iam pretty sure both bob dylan and billy joel hated the song mike and lional did for them at the time, and proberly even lional hates that song now, but Prince really just shoulda done it. In some ways, not doing it in 85 makes prince look arrogent (which he no doubt is) and unfortunately, a bloke who takes himself way too seriously. [Edited 4/1/06 15:45pm]
