An absolute Prince classic..has picked me up on many an occassion...Filled with memorable lines

"happy is the way to meet your burdens no matter how heavy or dark the day..."
"sacred is the prayer that ask for nothing, seeking to give thanks for every breathe we take...the only love there is is the love we make...ummph!

...I wouldn't mind it one bit.

Jonathan Coleman - As in Lisa's brother, ex-member of Smashing Pumpkins.

If anyone's heard/seen the L.A. 2004 concert, didn't Prince dedicate a song to Jonathan Coleman? Can't remember which one.

And The Love We Make is a real gem of a song. In some ways, I like it better than Purple Rain. I don't like some of Purple Rain's lyrics:

U say u want a leader
But u can’t seem 2 make up your mind
I think u better close it
And let me guide u 2 the purple rain

Closing your mind is never good and Prince seems to think it's OK in this song for some reason. Rubs me the wrong way.

I know that someone with a closed mind usually represents ignorance, but in this case I think Prince suggests letting your heart and soul guide you, which works for the song imo.

As for "The Love We Make", it's one of my favorite songs of all time. I'd love it if Prince closed shows with it. Far too many people haven't heard it and I've yet to hear it live.

Do you all think that "The Love We Make" would be as effective as the closer to Prince's shows as "Purple Rain" is?

No!

But if The Love We Make replaces Purple Rain (for a while), then we should include "Gold" as an equal replacement. The same would have to be said about either "Everlasting Now" or "Last December"

to me, "Gold" is a bit over the top. Almost too much of an anthem. It tries to hard whereas "The Love We Make" just "is."

I really love that song. Always have....I agree that "Last December" has that same spiritual quality as "PR" and "The Love We Make."

I thought that "The Love We Make" was written for someone who perished from drug abuse. It makes perfect sense!

"The Love We Make" is a great anthem, just like "Purple Rain." I can see it being a really cool show-closer. It packs a visceral emotional punch and his vocals are beautifully raw and affecting. Really stands out on "Emancipation" because of the raw, touching nature of it - very unlike most of the rest of that album. I can definitely see Prince bringing the muthafuckin house down with a killer live version.

Oh, and might as well include "Live 4 Love" as a set-closer that could match PR or The Love We Make or the others I mentioned.

Wonder if Live 4 Love would be cleaned off and played again at his upcoming gigs? That would be cool, very cool.

It was Jonathon Melvoin, Wendy's brother, not Lisa's. He played with the Revolution on the ATWIAD album some. He's credited in the liner notes.

Mm. People "get" the meaning of "Purple Rain" just fine, I think. The chorus is a bit metaphoric, but the verses are straight up literal. They're almost casual, like he's talking to an old friend. "Purple Rain" is one of his plainest, most easily accessible songs."

Padawan, check this out. I was at work last week and this guy walked in and had "Purple Rain" playing as his ring tone. The guy is probably about 20-21 so I was kinda surprised. Anyway, I asked him what did the song mean because I remembered your comments that the lyrics were easily accessible. So, the guy says "I have no idea, I dont listen to the words, just the beat."
LOL
I thought that was hilarious...

listening to our conversation was another co worker who is in his mid 40's and he chimed in and said his wife went to see "Purple Rain" back in '84 and they used to have the record. So I asked him what did the song mean. He had NO clue. NONE. He was shocked when I told him that "Little Red Corvette" wasnt about a car....LOL

you would be shocked to know how many songs go over people's heads...
