The Arms Of Orion

Was sung with the frog. At least she sounds like one.

I never got into The Arms of Orion. Way too syrupy for me, and I wasn't buying him singing it to Sheena Easton. He does some weird stuff with his voice in that song too. None of it makes sense to me. It is odd. But wasn't the B-side great?!

I agree with you, Moonbeam. I guess mostly because Prince, esp. in these later years, seems like he wants to divorce himself from mainstream pop music. Most of the people he sings with now are not well known, despite the fact that they are extremely talented.

I realize that the song was done in 1989, which makes my first point invalid. But the fact is that I didn't discover this song until last year, so it creeps me out to hear him sing such a crap song with Madonna (the queen of the pop charts).

The strangest duet would be Orgasm with Prince and Vanity.

Two of the biggest names in contemporary music and they produce "Love Song"? I don't get it. "Act of Contrition" makes a little more sense -- that is Prince on guitar and wailing, right?

Good call. Especially since it was released (excuse the pun) more than 10 years after it was created.

smile Ive always considered Love Song a really good song. One of the best songs on that Maddy album. Even though I like Madonna quite a lot.
Yep, its a good song. A good Prince song.

I like "Love Song" with Madonna. It is a little too repetitive and the line "Are you wasting my time?" is repeated over and over. But I like the mesmerizing "feel" of the song.Prince's vocals are awesome on this song!

I really like "Love Song". While the rest of "Like a Prayer" album is really radio friendly pop (well, the title song was controversial but still it did great on radio I think), "Love Song" really stands out. Although I agree it is not that musically accomplished as other Prince songs. Besides I really dig the fact that Prince and Madonna did a lot of things together (romance, music, even preliminary talks about the movie) - two most interesting personas in the music industry in my humble opinion.

And the dullest duets:

Arms of Orion
Take Me with U (with Apollonia)
______________
Vanity working on a weak head produces every sort of mischief.

I vote for "The arms of orion": horrible song, awful lyrics.

I'd heard that one of the reasons 'Love Song' is so odd is that it was originally a 'Camille' song, and was intended as a much faster track. When he decided to use the track with Madonna, instead of leaving it as a fast track with a 'Camille' vocal, or re-recording the vocals at the correct speed, he slowed the entire track down to return the vocals to normal. He then decided he liked it better at the slow speed before recording Madonna's vocals and some additional instrumentation.

On a side note, the same thing happened in reverse with 'U Got The Look'. It was originally recorded as a slow, funky song, only becoming a 'Camille' track when he decided the track sounded better faster.

The duet that I think is the strangest of all is one that has not been released and is only talked about in hardcore fan circles populated by militant Prince collectors...

It has long been rumored that Prince has been feverishly working on a project called "Slim Whitman: The New Masters" where he is reworking classic Slim Whitman songs...

...there are stale, plastic drum machine beats, raps, some funk, record scratching interludes and (you heard it here first) Prince's first fart ever recorded and mixed into a track!!! I thought that it was a tuba when I first heard it, but there was a throaty rumble to it that a tuba couldn't really reproduce... I talked to some engineers and producers who verified that the diminuitive musician had indeed "blown a fart" on a microphone to help provide an ostenato bass part for a polka number... according to sources, he had prepared himself for the take by consuming 13 smoked sausages and a bowl of sauerkraut.

If you are a member of the NPGMC, look for "Slim Whitman: The New Masters" in your mailbox soon!

Prince and Barney Rubble on that "Flinstones Stomp" song they did together...Barney's goofy laughing really fucked up what could have been a decent club hit, in my opinion...
