#1 Who cares?

3121 is #1---cool. What does it mean/prove? Good marketing? Prince is "popular"?
Dirty Mind wasn't #1 so who the fuck cares? Don't get me wrong--it's cool for Prince, and I take a little satisfaction in it, but even Prince recognizes that the mountaintop ain't all that so why are we turning into Michael Jacksonish chart watchers???

It means it sold more units than any of the other records in stores that week.

It proves that Prince can still deliver a chart topper.

It gives him all sorts of leverage now, be it concert and tour negotiations, future record deals, prime time TV spots, whatever.

And it probably bugs the fuck out of Michael Jackson.

I agree with this- I am happy if this gives Prince the opportunity to be in the spotlight and get out more DVD's and concerts, etc.

Prince is an artist that I enjoy a great deal.

When success visits his doorstep, I’m naturally happy for him and I take it as another interesting factoid that will shape this crazy ride.

When positive things happen to him I’m of course not going to be as happy for him as a family member or close friend, but it’s a mild pleasure to see positive things happen to people, especially people that you have interest in.

If Prince has a hit or two with this album and it goes on to sell 2- to 5-million copies or more, I’ll likely be attending a concert this year in a 15,000-seat arena while hearing most of “3121” played.

If it goes on to sell only 300,000 copies (although I think it’s already far surpassed that worldwide) Prince might not even tour, or he may choose a 2,000-seat theater tour with a vastly different set list.

So of course I’m interested to see how this all plays out.

And I always root for success to befall art that I think is of high quality. But that’s where my chart interest ends.

I don’t base buying decisions or interest level on success or lack of success, but rather on my own, hard fought, ever changing and expanding viewpoint.

What’s interesting to me is how you wrote eight paragraphs without saying a damned thing.

I find that fascinating.

“Hard fought, ever changing and expanding viewpoint?” What viewpoint? That if 3121 sells poorly Prince won't make a lot of money? What. The. Fuck.

If that's your hard fought, ever changing and expanding viewpoint, that's just pathetic.

since when has MJ ever felt 'bugged' by Prince?

hasnt it always been the other way round?

wasnt Prince the one to be pissed at MJ cuz he was more popular?

and P's lil ego couldnt handle it?

lol

anyway i think the whole rivalry thing between them as far as fans go is kinda dumb.

if we wanna talk about charts positions and good marketing
you cant really go past 54 million album sales of Thriller.

the fact that Prince is at number 1 is good mainly because with the type of music on 3121 - it will open doors for new artists to produce styles that arent 'the same ' as everything else - and it will give incentive to record companies to broaden their horizons a little bit regarding styles of music instead of only going with whatever is 'safe to sign'.

Prince is a door-opener in the lower worlds .

Being #1 ain't shit these days. I mean look who he has to share the charts with. I'd rather he not make the chart at all because I'd hate to see his next album after this one be a bunch of weak stuff trying to appeal to the little thugged out Mousekateers.

Ah, fuck it! I'm not too thrilled with it either. wink

I know where you're coming from. You rely on your own standards when assessing music, not what the people say.

Some people are so starved for acceptance they let their opinion be colored by others.

Good thing you have a sense of humor about yourself. thumbs up!

Prince Cares!

He's always had issue with popularity and such self esteam, ego driven, motives.
News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so.
You have those internalized issues because you want to, you like to, stop.
