The TWO saddest things about Prince "debuting" at number ONE...

    1) It took him 28 years to do it.
    2) He did it with "3121".

Other than that, Congrats!

For THIS week, at least...
• Did you first think Prince was gay? •

Wendy: He’s a girl, for sure, but he’s not gay. He looked at me like a gay woman would look at another woman. Lisa: Totally. He’s like a fancy lesbian.

I agreed. I wondered what is going to happen after this week since it is hard to be number one for more than a couple of weeks.

I'm just grateful that I didn't follow the masses of people who only stick to whats popular at the moment. Thank God I kept going along with Prince on his musical exploration. The Treasures that he found and left for others to discover is mind blowing. Being there along the way to only anticipate what he could possibly come up with next to outdo his current Joint. Yeah Purple Rain was Great! I have one copy unopened and haven't listened to it in years. One day I will. For Now however, I'm still feeling everything he has done afterwards. Whether it charted at #1 or #201. I remember sitting in the theater watching Purple Rain opening night. WOW! SO like Prince himself you have to move on and stop living in the past. Don't be sad about it. If you stuck with him from when you first started listening to him until now, then atleast YOU didn't miss out. IT's all about the MUSIC. Right now it's all about the 3121.

There are plenty of Prince albums that SHOULD have been number one but weren't. Even if you don't think 3121 is worthy of the number one spot, look at it this way, it makes up somewhat for all those other albums, it's KARMA!

It's a better album than at least one of his previous number 1 albums.

The saddest thing is how far it will fall the second week, no the third week, no.... After the fannies have it, falls off the chart, goes to cut out, ends up at the flea market
and my grandfather picks it up for $1, thinking its Harry Belafonte, and gets a damn purple ticket. Tosses the whole thing out after hearing the first track (along with the ticket)

sad

sad indeed.

TurnItUp

The only thing sad on this tread is YOU! It took him 20 years to debut at #1. Around the World in a Day debuted at #1 in 1985 and if it's true that the Batman soundtrack debuted at #1 then it took almost 17 years.

I agree Diamonds and Pearls and Sign O the times or Emancipation and especially Musicology would've been a great #1 debut, but not Lovesexy, Graffiti Bridge, Love/Symbol, Gold, Chaos, definitely not Rave, Rainbow Children or N.E.W.S.
The way I look at it it's a great thing because could've debuted at #1 or been #1 at all. It has been looking that way for a long time now. Ain't nothin' sad about Prince bumpin' off these no-talent hags of today. Nothin'

The chart position of the album is completely irrelevant.

The only question is : Do you like the album?

It took me a while to realise it myself, but Prince has already provided enough music that I will always love. I need nothing more from him. I now look upon every album individually, and I really like 3121.

I would imagine most people feel the same. Yeah, it's great to know lots of people love him as well when he charts high, but it really doesn't affect my opinion of him. Why should it? I love the look on peoples faces when they ask what music I'm into and I reply Prince.

Amen! I mean what is wrong with some of you. So what it took him that long? Have you seen the albums that have debuted #1 lately? Why can't "FANS" be happy for him? We got another thread talking about it's because of Universal....AND?????

I welcome differing opinion, and I find this board to be very very informative, however at times I find some of the things so-called fans say are very strange and sometimes mean.

here are mine:

1) he did it on a week with NO competition
2) he still had to use the Purple ticket gimmick to do it

the question i have: if Ultimate would have been released Might he have had 2 albums on the top of the charts?

You mean its a fact that the purple ticket increased sales?
Where did you read this?

I think in your opinion the purple ticket increased sales
but I have seen no facts that prove this.

So you're saying that as fans we should not be happy for him and not care when good news, no matter how or why it happens occurs.

Okay, then don't be happy for him then. As for me, I choose to look at the positive side of things, in that he is a true musician that deserves such an accomplishment, which is not worthy of most of these tired ass artists today. Maybe this attention could turn a few people, perhaps out of curiousity, on to his musical legacy and stop listening to this garbage that's out there. But that's looking at the BRIGHT side of things.

i am happy... but this topic is about the sad truth about 3121 being #1. chart position is only important for publicity. sales are more important ad 180K is not that much for an artist of his caliber.

The chartheads have said that so far this year, that is the second highest set of sales for opening week. So, with sales down all over, that is pretty good.

ok i can accept that... and I do hope (well kind of) that it keeps selling well.. I would love to see it go PPP at least... but then again that will just make concert tickets that much harder to get....
