I could hear that a little but first I accidentally clicked on the "Songs of Freedom" song and it sounds very much like the Time, or I guess the Time sounds like it.

actually, this santana cd wasn't released until 1987, so i would assume that he is the one borrowing influences from prince and the time...

That is true, but I wasn't saying that either of them stole anything from the other.

They do have very similar melodies.

You're reading too much into it, they hardly even sound similar.

I've always felt that International Lover borrowed heavily from Somewhere Over The Rainbow from the wizard of Oz, what do you think? Still, I love that song and the 1999 album is to me, superior to Purple Rain.

"Love Is You" sounds like a lot of smooth rock/jazz songs I've heard before. Maybe it's the guitar sound that makes you think of the "God" instrumental? Prince and Santana often use very similar guitar effects/timbres.

EDIT: I am referring to the version of "God" with vocals that can be found on "The Hits/The B-Sides."

Prince has definitely copped Santana on many occassions, but the melody is extremely similar... Oh, by the way, I have been a guitarist for 22 or 23 years, so I am pretty up on players/sounds, etc.

Back to the point at hand:

Think of Prince singing "God made you... God made me... he made us all... equally" while listening to the Santana track and you will see what I am saying. The melody is very similar and the phrasing is also similar.
