purple rain film question/notice i was notice-ing last night while watching purple rain, one thing really bothers me and it makes no sence.
when prince is sitting with his father at the piano, if you listen to the music he is playing, it is computer blue. and prince says "is that your" father says "of course it's mine, i've have lots" prince says " i'd like to see them sometime, you have them written down somewhere" father says "i don't need to write them down, that the big difference between you and me" now my question is when the performance footage kicks in, prince is playing computer blue on stage. are we to think he took his "fathers song" and turned it into one of his own songs. or are we sappose to be stupid and not realise that its the same music. as you can tell, i thought about this for some time last night while in bed..... anyone else notice this... noituloveR lautiripS weN a fo gninwaD eht si sihT

I think you ARE supposed to notice. One of the main themes of the film is Prince's relationship to his father - he wants to impress him, but at the same time, he is scared of repeating his father's mistakes and becoming his father. In that scene, Prince tries to reach out to his father, have a conversation about music, but his father angrily throws it back in his face. His father is clearly jealous of his son's success and takes his own failures out on his son and wife.
Prince using that melody for Computer Blue is his way of showing his love/hate for his father.

(ps..i chuckle at the overdub of the Kid's mother saying "he's crazy")

Prince using that melody for Computer Blue is his way of showing his love/hate for his father. Absolutely, for the same reason when he tells Prince that he doesn't write his music down and that marks a difference between them we later find that this isn't true. After his Dad tries to kill himself and Prince goes mad he discovers pages and pages of sheet music and he realises that they are more similar than he had ever thought before. Epiphany! Absolutely, for the same reason when he tells Prince that he doesn't write his music down and that marks a difference between them we later find that this isn't true. After his Dad tries to kill himself and Prince goes mad he discovers pages and pages of line music and he realises that they are more similar than he had ever thought before. Epiphany! Epiphany being..if the Kid doesn't change his ways, open his mind to Wendy and Lisa wanting to help write music..stop beating women..he'll be just like pops..
