No. I believe this is the reality. he is number one NOW, but not in 2 or three weeks. Do you believe, this record will appeal to a "new" audience? I don't think so. That is the reason why he doesent sell really lots of records over a few weeks. The first week sells reflect his loyal fan base. Do you believe, this record will appeal to a "new" audience? yes, many teenagers /young adults are tired of the r&b lame crap and want to discover other kinds of let's say.. "popular black music" 3121 the song, Fury, Get On The Boat.. are a good start.
* re edit he knew Universial has the strongest (read: ruthless) marketing power to make even the most bitter Prince-hater know that this album is worth buying! that's silly, so people bought this record because they have been brainwashed? I guess Robbie Williams should sign on Universal, that would make me his number one fan.

@jn2:
"I guess you haven't been to a Musicology concert or haven't seen, like me, the video bootleg of one of the LA concerts with theses thousands of people screaming at the end of LRC, 7.. but maybe you think that the audience was 100% Orgers, Housequakers and NPGclub members. " Well, no. A lot of the people i consider as "loyal fans are not here. But they are long time fans and over 30. I live in germany, we had no musicology tour over here. But one thing is interesting: musicology entered the charts at position 4. Same now with 3121: position 4. The reason is, in my opinion, that always the same people buy a new prince record. And I believe that this is, because he is not capable of making new supporters with his music anymore. Take a look at "real" chart hits these days, like the James Blunt record (not that I like it, just an example): Did u know James Blunt two Years ago? I didn't. So his single hit created a completely new fanbase. People buying this James Blunt record without knowing him before. he is in top 10 for weeks now, all over the world. That is, what prince isn't capable of these days. "yes, many teenagers /young adults are tired of the r&b lame crap and want to discover other kinds of let's say.. "popular black music"" I agree. But I doubt, that 3121 is an answer to this. It is not i courageous enough. Too much outdated drumsound, handclaps, 90s RnB Style. Don't get me wrong, I really like 3121 much. But I am a long time prince fan.... [Edited 4/4/06 1:27am]

Vaginas.
The reason why 3121 is so popular is becuase of vaginas. Vaginas were more-or-less absent in Musicology, NEWS, and The Rainbow Children. Vaginal musings are all over 3121. Hence, the success of the album.

Reviewers like expensive lunches, Dj's are like hooker (play whatever you want for the money) all those special Madonna-thons on radio/tv were paid commercials.... You can hardly tell what is fan driven and what is executive office driven these days.
Prince just wanted to use the machine to deliver his product for a change, where other artists are slaves to the machine and would get no where without it. Agree.

Contrary to popular belief, Prince knows how to pimp the system. Yes, the same system that's been pimping musical artists for decades. 2 years ago, he did it with Musicology, by bundling it with the ticket prices. This year it's with the purple tickets. Having one of the biggest pimps on board (Universal) keeps the other pimps (the rest of the industry) out of his way. Go 'head, Prince!! Pimp on with ya bad self!!! SexyBeautifulOne~if U know the HisStory, Prince built his musical foundation on word of mouth!! (it was a 'new' sound=remember!) Bcause of who/what he is & how he impacts folks with his music, its always circulated well beyond 'traditional' means...truly boyfriend learned the game from the ground up & plays by his OWN rules....perhaps all he did was pick the 'label' doing the slammin' distribution & he didn't care what 'package' they gave him knowing his own 'vision' would carry him (as it generally does) 2 where he wants the project 2 go...personally, B thinks he picked Universal cuz he knew that Uncle Frank would take good care of him on the US side B

Hardcore Prince fans, don't need marketing to buy his latest albums. What we will find is Prince is lumping a formulaic product on the market, which will only attract a limited core audience, and thus you will see the hardcore fans buy 3121 in its first few weeks. By May the sales would have slowed to a trickle, if its sold 200,000 in the 20th March-27th March period, it will be at 500,000 at best in the USA by May 1st, and maybe half that in territories outside of it.
Their marketing isn't that comprehensive, as here in NZ Sony BMG controls all the music and thus Prince's album is not advertised on posters or shelves in our stores. Often the Prince counter has disappeared into P shelved after numerous Presley albums or if it its there it always contains 1. Purple Rain 2. Various The Hits CDs and Sets 3. The very best of Prince 4. Musicology if u r lucky. Here 3121 failed to dent the Top 50, the album has sold 81 copies in New Zealand to date. 17 Years ago I made a commitment to Prince
