What songs should I play a friend who likes these songs from 3121? I've just played him the album, he's well into dub and breakbeats and so on, and he was very very impressed with several of the tracks, he was shocked at how modern and 'almost break beat-ish' they sounded (his words).
He liked: 3121 (alot!) Black Sweat (alot) Love (alot) Fury (loved the Santana style and now regrets ignoring me when I told him to watch The Brits!) The Word (I think he liked this one but he couldn't remember the name, he just loved the beat of it) He didn't really like: Lolita (meh) Te Amo Corazon Incense and Candles Satisfaction Beautiful, Loved & Blessed The Dance Get On The Boat As you can see he generally doesn't like Prince ballads, and he felt Get On The Boat was just funk that was too stereotypical, though bizarrely he said he felt there was 'nothing really happening/it didn't go anywhere' (one of the two!) which surprises me just as typical funk jams don't have Latino keys and drums etc, and I love the song. This is only after one listen and he did say he was so impressed with the ones he liked others might have fared worse than they would after repeated listens. So my question to you is: What older Prince songs should I play him based on the ones he likes from this? I think if he likes Fury I should probably play him Glasscutter. But what else? I have pretty much everything Prince has released under his own name album wise. He already has 1999 (which he really likes) and Hits/B-sides - though if you want to direct me to a particular song then go ahead (I've already stressed to him the importance of All The Critics Love U In New York to Bassment Jaxx who are one of his all-time faves). Thanks!

He's also just told me that he dislikes this technique he feels Prince uses alot, and does on Lolita, where he basically sings the synth/instrument riff, so it gets pretty old.
This never really occurred to me but I can imagine Prince does it alot, I explained to my mate that when you have nearly 30 albums there only so many techniques you can do. I feel abit sorry for him really as I'd hate to dislike a song purely on that, but it seems my friend does!
