i am happy... but this topic is about the sad truth about 3121 being #1. chart position is only important for publicity. sales are more important ad 180K is not that much for an artist of his caliber.

Actually, I did not buy 3121 for the purple ticket..If I won, good; ifI didn't cool and oh well. I wanted the music. I am sure that there are plenty more fans like myself.

I think you're forgetting that his career almost 30 years. The fact that this happened at his age, to me speaks volume. If you are the type of person who expects an artist who's been in the game as long as he is to sell platinum ALL THE TIME, and negate 180K, then that is really your problem, not Prince's.

I've entered 2 or 3 Purple Ticket online promotions, and still haven't gotten my lazy butt to a wrecka stow.

Albums didn't debut regularly at the no 1 spot until the 90's, so that's why it took so long. Maybe someone could explain why -- I guess it's due to Soundscan.

They should always include an asterisk beside any number regarding the music biz post 1991 because of Soundscan.

It is beyond belief that 3121 is the first Prince album to "debut" at #1.

Like the late great Barry White stated, "If the record company doesn't want you to have a number one album/song you won't have a number one ."

The saddest thing is how far it will fall the second week, no the third week, no.... After the fannies have it, falls off the chart, goes to cut out, ends up at the flea market
and my grandfather picks it up for $1, thinking its Harry Belafonte, and gets a damn purple ticket. Tosses the whole thing out after hearing the first track (along with the ticket)

sad

sad indeed.

And let's not even talk about Limp Bizkit's "Chocolate Starfish And the Hot Dog Flavored Water"... wink

Also, if you want banned threads, go HERE. I think the org can tolerate threads with differing opinions. Too bad some of its users can't.
• Did you first think Prince was gay? •

Wendy: He’s a girl, for sure, but he’s not gay. He looked at me like a gay woman would look at another woman. Lisa: Totally. He’s like a fancy lesbian.

Right on Rogue588. Definitely, Prince deserved this a long time coming. And, there were plenty of great albums that artistically should have made it.

But, there is a huge amount of money being sunk into the promotion by Universal. Go to your register at Starbucks and Prince's "3121" is right there staring at you. Head on over to FYE and "3121" is front and center at the first big CD display rack near the register.

I got a kick out of an ESPN air personality buying a coffee at Starbucks in Avon, CT and explaining to his daughter about the ticket giveaway in "3121" and relating it to Willie Wonka.

Bravo Prince and go on with your bad self.
