St. Paul Pioneer Press: It took 28 years but Prince scored a #1

NO. 1 WITH '3121'

It only took 28 years, but Prince scored a career first this week when his latest album, "3121," entered the Billboard album chart at No. 1.

It's been a long time since the Minneapolis native reigned over the charts. His three previous No. 1 albums — the soundtracks to "Purple Rain" and "Batman" and his 1985 release "Around the World in a Day" — all came as part of his superstar phase in the '80s.

Some 183,000 fans picked up "3121," securing Prince the top spot above new albums from B.G., Ben Harper and Teddy Geiger. There is already speculation some hardcore followers bought multiple copies of "3121" for its Willy Wonka-esque contest that randomly scattered seven "purple tickets" in the CD's first run. The winners will be invited to a private concert in Prince's home.

So far, Prince's promotion for "3121" has been limited to a "Saturday Night Live" appearance and a handful of club and theater concerts that kept the spotlight focused on his latest protégé, Tamar. Radio has yet to blow out any of the album's singles, including "Black Sweat," a stripped-down funk workout reminiscent of his classic hit "Kiss."

Still, it's a welcome feat for the Purple One, who has struggled to connect with mainstream audiences in recent years. His 2004 disc "Musicology" peaked at No. 3, thanks in part to his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and a massive tour. It was the first time he'd scored a Billboard Top 10 album since 1995's "The Gold Experience."

Even if it's for only a week, I'm loving this.

Me too. I've been praying for this for a very long time. God answers prayer even if it takes a while!
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

So all of these articles are saying this is a career first for Prince, however they also mention a bunch of other #1 albums. Did the other albums like Batman and ATWIAD not get to #1 in the first week? Is that what is unique about 3121?

Apparently 3121 is his first CD to debut at #1, especially since the charts became a part of Soundscan. It's hard for me to believe that too but it's true.

i'd disagree with that

many of my friends who are by no means big fans have bought the new CD. They've ignored every release for the last 10 years, but got pulled-in somehow by this. And, last weekend, I was at 2 targets that were out of stock on 3121. I know that ain't ALL due to 'fanatics' buying multiple copies. I'm sure multi-buying inflated the numbers, but only a bit.
