I thought this was covered already.
The reason they are being deleted is because they are off-topic and at times stupid as all get out. There is no General Discussion forum at the moment, get over it. Post that shit at alt.music.prince And I hope the threads about Prince farting, and wiping his butt get the boot too. The GD forum was locked because people kept making offensive/inflammatory posts on purpose. Ben, Matt and Co. have real jobs and this site is a friggin' hobby. They shouldn't have to treat it as a second job ...that they are not being paid for. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

the bottom line, getting your thoughts deleted after its running and rolling with no negativity is alarming i dont care who u are. its yet to be adequatly explained to me why harmless threads are killed. GD was an outpost for such threads and it was removed. now the music forum gets currupted and deleted on a daily basis, its some serious bull sheet rock. Kim Rachell who never creates a thread did so to shout out that she was alright in Brazil Deleated. How about the moderators get to know there own comunity alittle better and maybe they would think twice. if being a brat is a sin THEN LET ME BE GUILTY!

Ever since the Org Masters got on this deleting rampage, the quality of the org has diminished and the overall boredom level has skyrocketed. Had you looked at Nep2nes' "MIA orgers" thread before deleting it, you would have seen a large number of long-time orgers who are MIA. Maybe instead of deleting it, you could have considered why they are MIA. While it’s true that many threads probably deserve deletion, (including all of those authored by yours truly) there was never a clear and consistent manner of doing so before, only the threat “Posts may be deleted for any reason by the moderators, without explanation (deal with it).”
Maybe you guys need to reevaluate the purpose of the Org and decide if it's really worth your time and effort. Is this just a place for Prince fans to get news and discuss Prince? Or is this really the "Online Fan Community" the banner at the top of the page claims it to be? Either way, the purpose needs to be stated clearly as well as being consistent and constant with regards to the threads and topics that are allowed or deleted. Threads such as "If Prince Made a Sandwich...Would you eat it?" and "Does Prince use Moist Tissues to wipe his rear?" can be cited to illustrate my point. While being pointless and silly threads, they bring a certain character and humor to the org and, unlike the "MIA orgers" thread and countless others, are allowed to remain. It seems somewhat strange to create a General Discussion Forum stating "Get Wild. Get Loose. Get freaky, let ya head bop..." only to later close that very forum due to it getting too wild and freaky. Many orgers used to view this place as a community where we could come to not only talk about Prince, but to share thoughts and opinions on a variety of subjects or simply to be silly. Because, honestly, there aren't that many interesting tidbits about Prince to even justify this site. I’m not going to lie. I’ve made some good friends here on an internet website devoted to Prince. Sad and pathetic? Maybe, but so many of us have done it! I lurked around at the Org BBQ and I saw the strong bonds between people, many of which were forged right here at the Org. That is something for the Org Masters to be proud of! And were all of you orgers talking exclusively about Prince at the BBQ? I think not. So why can’t we have that type of community here at the “Online Fan Community?” The remaining orgers need a place to be silly and talk about nothing. We need Icenine and BillySparxx and shausler and POOK and, may God strike me down, oceana and vagina. I hate to see people fall away due to different interpretations of "Online Fan Community." Org Masters, I ask that you simply consider what I've stated and not blow me off like Matt did with the orgnote I sent to him prior to the Celebration when I made a similar plea. Please don't invoke the "it's our site and we'll do as we please with it and if you don't like it you can leave" reasoning. While it's true, it's a rather weak argument that simply masks the fact that this is your "ball and if we don't like your rules, you'll just take it and go home." Many of us have offered to donate to the Prince.org coffers to help defray the costs incurred by maintaining such a site. In conclusion, I again cite the "3 C's" for the Org Masters to consider. Please be CLEAR, CONSTANT and CONSISTENT. Clear in regards to the purpose, intent and rules for the Org and constant and consistent in enforcing those policies.

I wasn't referring to you specifically as being a brat, but the general attiude to the situation as it stands. And no, it would seem the botton line is that the posts that were deleted were off topic to the forum they were placed in. The GD forum is locked for now. At this juncture it's not a matter of whether they were offensive (or not) or if the subsequent replies were civil (or not). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Why would we go to the trouble of closing GD and then let people post GD stuff in the remaining forums? We're still planning on reopening GD. But posting GD-type threads in the open forums isn't going to make it happen any sooner. Please, please, be patient. I think we have improved in the consistency department. I'm trying to catch all GD-type stuff in this forum and lock it. (Previously I was deleting it, but I've come to think that locking with an explanation is preferable, so people don't wonder, "What happened to thread X?") Some folks have posted questions like, "The thread on the HIV-positive Muppet had some good discussion--why was it locked?" But if I let that thread stay open while killing other off-topic threads, I'd be accused of inconsistency--one of the concerns that you raise. It bothers me to see how some people have reacted to the temporary closing of GD. Instead of being patient (and maybe finding some other outlet, such as alt.music.prince, in the meantime), they're displaying incredibly poor judgment by repeatedly posting off-topic stuff in the other forums when they know full well that it's not welcome. (Witness all the the threads starting with, "I'm sure this will get locked in five minutes, but...") Org Masters, I ask that you simply consider what I've stated and not blow me off like Matt did with the orgnote I sent to him prior to the Celebration when I made a similar plea. If I neglected to reply to your orgNote, I sincerely apologize, because that wasn't my intent. By way of explanation (not excuse), I was occupied with work matters at the time, in addition to handling the insurrection at prince.org. Many of us have offered to donate to the Prince.org coffers to help defray the costs incurred by maintaining such a site. I don't think costs (at least, money costs) are the issue here. Sure, the .org is dealing with some problems right now, but throwing money at them won't do any good. In conclusion, I again cite the "3 C's" for the Org Masters to consider. Please be CLEAR, CONSTANT and CONSISTENT. Clear in regards to the purpose, intent and rules for the Org and constant and consistent in enforcing those policies. I agree with all three of these. Let me add, though, that we're going to need some help from the prince.org community. Stuff like "Let's have a thread deletion contest!" will only hurt, not help. I'm making a good-faith effort to work toward improving the .org. Who's with me? Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position. |

To add to my previous post...

I've done my best to explain our actions, such as the prohibition of off-topic posts in this forum. Most people, even if they don't agree with us, have been respectful enough to comply with our wishes. Unfortunately, a few folks seem to think that they have an inalienable right to post whatever they please here. And that pretty much leaves us with the "it's our site and you play by our rules here" card. Because no matter how you slice and dice it, that's how it is. There's an open letter from the Grateful Dead that they wrote after a gate-crashing incident at a nearby concert... it seems to reflect my feelings on the irresponsible behavior that's been going on here lately. In particular, I find this excerpt especially relevant: And when you hear somebody say "Fuck you, we'll do what we want," remember something. That applies to us, too. When people persist in posting off-topic stuff after being asked to stop, or engage in antics like a "thread deletion contest," that's saying to the prince.org staff: "Fuck you, we'll do what we want." Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position. |
