George Michael vs. Prince

Normally I don't like to compare songwriters/musicians, however I saw the Michael Jackson vs. Prince thread and thought this would be interesting to hear what everybody's thoughts are.

I don't think you can compare the two when it comes to musicianship. Clearly Prince is the innovator here and his talent dwarfs George's in this category although George does play alot of the instruments on his recordings. I do think it is telling that you never see George play an instrument live and even he has admitted his limitations outside of the studio.

However, when it comes to vocals I must say that I believe that George has the edge here. His voice seems much stronger and rich and just like Prince you can tell a George Michael song from the first notes uttered. Not taking anything away from Prince, but George Michael is a phenomenal singer who is one of the best. There will never be another like him.

Now to the last category as a songwriter, arranger and producer. I believe that George is lacking in the output of material during the last 20 years. Clearly Prince is much more prolific. However, the quality of the material that has been put out by George (when he does release material) is fantastic. I have to say is not necessarily stronger lyrically but when it comes to melodies and arrangements it is hard to top George.

Just some of my thoughts. What do you all think?

Also it's interesting to me that both performers also harmonize really well with themselves in the studio. Neither needs any background singers when it comes to their music.

George pens superior love-song lyrics and his dance tracks are stronger.

Prince is the better musician and live performer.

I think George Michael is a good singer but I've only heard him sing in one

voice...not to say he can't change his voice, but that is one thing I like

about Prince he is so versatile he can change his voice at the drop of a hat!!

Have U heard "For You"? It's amazing!!

George is cool. I never really liked him when he was very popular but now I appreciate his talent, though he doesn´t even come close to Prince,so no comparison at all...I guess even George himself would laugh about even the thought of comparing the two.

He seems to like and respect Prince a lot.

By the way, if I recall correctly Prince went upstairs and had a little chat with him right before the 1994 Tränenpalast show in Berlin started.Lots of celebrities there , it was after the MTV Awards.

George isn´t really prolific....I used to blame it on his heavy cannabis consumption but he said he writes much better when he´s stoned, so there you go.

Funnily enough I used to like Wham before I got into Prince.....But then prior to Purple Rain there wan't much that grabbed my attention in the world of music !!

George Micheal is a great singer / songwriter in his own Genre as is Prince is in his Genre there is no comparison as they are completely different.

This would be like saying Jimi Hendrix vs Al Di Meola !!!!!

Class clown more like. But it was funny.

As for George Michael music, I like a bunch of his stuff, but he went a bit wiggy after "Faith." "Freedom '90" was truly funky though.

From start to finish "Faith" sounded like a tribute album to Prince. Even the album cover concept and his new non-Wham, crucifix-earing, stubbled look seemed Prince-informed.

And he won the Grammy for best album, didn't he?

I remember on MTV News back in 89 the VJ (Alan Hunter) said that George Micheal showed up at a Prince after show and jammed "I Want Your Sex" live with the band. Never been able to track that one down.

George's recent albums are all way too lounge-jazzy and samey , he releases the poppier stuff as singles but generally its not reflective of his albums as a whole , flattering to decieve maybe ?

George has come out, we are waiting for Prince to.
Prince is way better, Michael has an Ok voice but hasnt had a hit since 1998, his albums now are cod, self indulgent and hardly ever present. What Prince has in common with a Cypriot/British overweight balding poofter is beyond me.
17 Years ago I made a commitment to Prince

Both are great singers and 80´s icons and both fought against their record labels, both are very talented songwriters and multiinstrumentalists....but hey, I didn´t come up with the comparison. lol

Anyway , could you please elaborate on the "overweight balding " part of your post ?

I had a conversation with a friend of mine the other day, and we were both kinda surprised about George´s good looks despite of smoking tons of marijuana....I know there´s this unfavorable pic of him in his car where he´s barely recognizable ( looks old in it and has gray facial hair ) but I wouldn´t say he´s overweight ...or is he now ?

Also, I think he´s got great, thick and dense hair for his age...maybe a bit gray now, but thick and dense nevertheless.Even though he smokes tons of weed....some scientists say weed makes your hair thin, others say the opposite.

Just curious, you know?

George Michael is way better thn Prince. His guitar, drums, bass and keyboards skills are amazing. He can jam with any musician when Prince sounds ridiculous on stage when he tries to jam with guys like Maceo Parker or Santana.
George Michael is an amazing live performer. Most of his tours have made history. Prince looks like an asmatic compared to our good old George.
George Michael's influence on music is amazing. He has created a unique sound you recognize instantly. Listen to Outkast, D'Angelo or Alicia Keys and you'll see what I mean. Prince is stuck in one style of music when George can go into Funk, Rock, Heavy metal, pop or Jazz whenever he wants to.
George Michael has written tons of tunes a hell a lot better than 1999, Little Red Corvette, Purple Rain, Let's go crazy, when doves cry, Erotic city, she's always in my hair, America, Rasberry Beret etc etc.
No really how can one compare these two men. george Michael is in a different league of his own. he will be remembered as a great musician like Miles Davis, Zappa and others. Prince's career is over anyway cuz naysayers have said so a long time ago and as everybody knows...naysayers are always right about everything.
