The dumbasses are out in force today I see!

The attitudes displayed here today "hey I'm not doing anything wrong, why should I worry?" is exactly why Americans allow ludicrous infringments of civil liberties to become law on a regular basis. The Digital Millenium Copyright Act is just one recent example.

It isn't paranoid to want to protect your civil liberties. It isn't paranoid to fight for your privacy rights. Going down this road is a slippery slope which you may not all understand fully. The next step would be to outlaw outright all private use of encryption technology (as they did in France many years back). You may as well just start learning Newspeak right now.

It's true ... you don't truly appreciate something until it is gone.

Thank you, Ian... that is what I have been trying to tell people...

BTW: The Libertarian Party (of which I am a member as I mentioned before) is the only political party in America that opposes this sort of thing. It is even part of the party's platform. Here is an excerpt from the Libertarian Party's privacy platform:

"The individual's right to privacy, property, and right to speak or not to speak should not be infringed by the government. The government should not use electronic or other means of covert surveillance of an individual's actions or private property without the consent of the owner or occupant. ...

We oppose all restrictions and regulations on the private development, sale, and use of encryption technology. We specifically oppose any requirement for disclosure of encryption methods or keys, including the government's proposals for so-called "key escrow" which is truly government access to keys, and any requirement for use of government-specified devices or protocols. We also oppose government classification of civilian research on encryption methods."

So... what do you think of this???

I think the USA is becoming a police state more each day.

And I think this should come as no suprise, this was to be expected. Already after september 11 the US "Patriot" (barf) act allowed your government to intrude your privacy in unprecedented ways. Like the artcicle says this act just builds on this act.
But now they want to bring in 'snitches', working as 'volunteers' (barf), so-called to protect your 'national security' (barf)

Sounds more and more communist to me. Totalitarian ideas, policies and laws... and most of you Americans still buy into the crap that its for their own "security". The government has got a lot of you brainwashed into believing they are really trying to protect your ass.

"Until we secure our cyber infrastructure, a few keystrokes and an Internet connection is all one needs to disable the economy and endanger lives," sponsor Lamar Smith, R-Tex., said earlier this year. "A mouse can be just as dangerous as a bullet or a bomb."

this is just plain ridiculious paranoid thinking and talking. But when you see where this "sponsor" comes from and who he usually deals with it all becomes clear...

Smith heads a subcommittee on crime, which held hearings that drew endorsements of CSEA from a top Justice Department official and executives from Microsoft and WorldCom.

Endorsements from Microsoft and Worldcom...

Two of the biggest companies that really respect the civil rights of the people... ha! Microsoft has just "updated" mediaplayer, so you can all get screwed by their Digital rights mangament (DRM), tracking your every move.
no more copies for your personal use, no more filesharing, no more freedom of information.

And we all know Microsoft is a monopolist.

And we all know Worldcom is based on an airbag of fraud.

And we all know you are all fucked.

A committee report accompanying the legislation predicts: "A terrorist or criminal cyber attack could further harm our economy and critical infrastructure. It is imperative that the penalties and law enforcement capabilities are adequate to prevent and deter such attacks."

Ohhh so it's all about the "economy" uh? So what's really new? well... new is that you can now get life in prison for doing that.

Imho the executives from your fraud based companies are endangering your economy and they should be seen as the true criminals that also jepordize the stability in the economy of the world.

Most industry associations, including the Business Software Alliance, the Association for Competitive Technology, the Information Technology Association of America, and the Information Technology Industry Council, have endorsed most portions of CSEA.

Indeed it's all about the economy.

no fighting for your privacy rights isn't paranoid. Once they are endangered by these laws you have every reason to ask, protest and criticise.

what is paranoid is the attitude of the US government. They act like a cat in danger... a cat in danger makes funny moves... causing things to quickly get out of hand.

The veils are dissolving.

There will be no more secrets.

We thought we were free but the 'company store' has bought and sold us a thousand times.

The military industrial complex created by the robber barons of the last century is now fully visible in the face of George W.

Look at his face. He is a mirror. He shows you what you are not.

You are Light,
You are Electricity,
Dance the dance electric,
Be glad that you are free.

Yeah, the new Homeland Security Plan will definitely need to be reviewed, and Bush is going to get all the changes he's asking for. Alot of things the government has gotten heat for, such as interviewing thousands of arabic men throughout the U.S. and throwing many non-citizens in jail has benefited. Though it wasn't widely reported, this did prevent another attack in Washington D.C.

For the most part, the government's too incompetent for a vast conspiracy theory, although undoubtedly there can be rogue elements.

Also, keep in mind, alot of changes are going into effect now since we're hitting Iraq with everything we've got, possibly in November (I have a feeling this won't be a month by month build-up to pre-warn Saddam. He's already got missles packed away, most assurdely with more chemical/biological crap, with Israel in range. I have a feeling we're going to pull a quickie on that bastard the likes he never dreamed of). As a result of the coming ousting of Saddam, we have to assume more terrorist attacks, so that's why more security measures are going in place...but again, let's review 'em.

Correction, the one sentence should read:

and Bush is NOT going to get all the changes he's asking for.

My apologies.
