I heard a funny story about how,in 1981,Michael bought a copy of Prince's 'Controversy' album but he had no idea what the last song ("Jack U Off") was about. When his assistant explained the song's meaning to him,Mike said "Only Prince would write about something like that" lol

It's so pathetic that in '81 he needed the shit explained hammer ill

this thread just reminded me of being back at Paisley Park in the room with the pool table and jukebox. There were lots of Jackson 5 records in there. Definitely the Jacksons were an influence for him growing up . . . .

I think Prince is well secure enough within himself to play someone else's song. It's only the media that tries to turn Prince and MJ into WWF. Madonna did some of "Billie Jean" in a live version of "Like A Virgin." In the sixties bands used to "quote" each other which was kewl.

ALSO to put it in a Purple Gemini Frame (as a non purple non Gemini) didn't Tamar list MJ as an artist she admires? So this is a kewl gesture from P since she likes MJ's and P's music.

Bottom line: MJ has some funky songs-especially "Don't Stop 'til you Get Enough." Although the song has actually been sung by Tamar, Prince has said that he never saw MJ as a rival or even competition. He also has played "Billie Jean" at soundchecks and so forth. Basically, unlike MJ, Prince doesn't sweat the so called "competion" and is obviously cool enough to play a lick of MJ's songs now and again.

By this "funky" rationale, shouldn't Prince be playing Rick James' songs?

that doesn't surprise me. Prince was 12 years old in 1970, and like most 13 year olds at the time, he was listening to the Jackson 5.

"What do you think of Michael Jackson?"

"Genius"

"What do you think of Janet Jackson?"

"Sister of a Genius"

interview with P circa Rave Unto the Joy Fantastic (I think)...

Of course Michael Jackson was an influence on Prince. Imagine you are ten years old and someone your same age is has been an international star now for five years.

I think P's early falsetto work was influenced by Michael and Curtis Mayfield and perhaps even Phillip Bailey, but who knows?

Regardless of what anyone may think about Michael Jackson's personal life, he was undeniably one of the most influential performers of the seventies and eighties.

Did he has Jacksons albums (with CBS) and Michael solo album (with Epic) or just J5 albums (with Motown)?

There WERE Jackson Five records in the Juke! I forgot about that! I remember doing a double-take and thinking the same thing....afterall, they are the same age. While Prince was younger, MJ was performing. We have to remember no one knew how things would turn out now. Know one thought MJ would be a nutball. He was a solid performer at a young age. Prince had to be inspired by that. (I hate to admit it.)

Just saw an old documentary - Prince the early years - feaaturing Chris Moon. Mr. Moon conmfirmed that Prince was indeed put out by the comparisons between him and MJ and wanted to create a particular individual style/sound for himself that was uniquely his. The reason I qoute Moon is that it confirms by someone close to P. that the whole MJ/P rivarly thing was/is genuine.

Now, what I wanna know is how the hell does P. get on stage and perform Jackson songs? I ain't saying P. hates MJ, but it doesn't make any sense to me.

Does anyone know the man's reasoning/sudden change of heart?

Did he drink too much Jesus juice or something?

Sorry if this is a done topic, I don't read every thread on here...

One word - support. Its all love and hes basically saying "come on now, you know we've come too gd far to let these mofos stop us now. Do what you do baby."
Nobodys told the story Quincy Jones tells about having P and MJ over his house in the early 80s. He said they both just kinda stared at each other and didnt say much. They were both young and hungry. Anyway, P is making a rather magnanimous gesture and hopefully Mike reciprocates. The best is yet to come.
