Why is Prince singing MJ songs? Just saw an old documentary - Prince the early years - feaaturing Chris Moon. Mr. Moon conmfirmed that Prince was indeed put out by the comparisons between him and MJ and wanted to create a particular individual style/sound for himself that was uniquely his. The reason I qoute Moon is that it confirms by someone close to P. that the whole MJ/P rivarly thing was/is genuine.
Now, what I wanna know is how the hell does P. get on stage and perform Jackson songs? I ain't saying P. hates MJ, but it doesn't make any sense to me. Does anyone know the man's reasoning/sudden change of heart? Did he drink too much Jesus juice or something? Sorry if this is a done topic, I don't read every thread on here...

Because the songs are good! "Man, the living creature, the creating individual, is always more important than any established style or system" - Bruce Lee

Bottom line: MJ has some funky songs-especially "Don't Stop 'til you Get Enough." Although the song has actually been sung by Tamar, Prince has said that he never saw MJ as a rival or even competition. He also has played "Billie Jean" at soundchecks and so forth. Basically, unlike MJ, Prince doesn't sweat the so called "competion" and is obviously cool enough to play a lick of MJ's songs now and again. "New Power slide...."

I think Prince is well secure enough within himself to play someone else's song. It's only the media that tries to turn Prince and MJ into WWF. Madonna did some of "Billie Jean" in a live version of "Like A Virgin." In the sixties bands used to "quote" each other which was kewl.
ALSO to put it in a Purple Gemini Frame (as a non purple non Gemini) didn't Tamar list MJ as an artist she admires? So this is a kewl gesture from P since she likes MJ's and P's music. WTF? I can't believe how much BS people put into Mike's mouth. He has never commenting on the MJ vs Prince thing. Never. Prince is the only one who's ever said anything and all he said was "Michael's a lover not a fighter". There's no BS MJ/Prince battle. Infact, I think they really dig each others music. Prince did "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough" in concert and MJ did "Gonna Be A Beautiful Night" during a concert on his Bad tour. [Edited 3/28/06 18:54pm]

Jacko wanted to be a movie star, and after that, he pursued it with captain eo (sorta) and of course moonwalker. On a side note, i woulda loved to of seen jacko play peter pan in "hook". He looked ok then too. Shame.

Not out of jealousy or spit but just because he thought it was a cool thing to do and was inspired by Prince. I too would've loved to see MJ play PP in Hook. I heard he really wanted the part. It would've been cool. There's alot of PP-related roles I think MJ could've played, like J. M. Barrie in Finding Neverland for example. Anyway, stop this MJ vs Prince BS. For all we know, MJ and Prince call each other every year and say "What can we do this year to make people think we are against each other"? and then laugh when their fans create threads like this one.

I feel that prince and michael are both mature 47 year old men and michael has been through alot ofstuff this past year. I feel that prince is letting him know in a way that it is going to be alright and guess what ireally dig ya music. There is no rivalry.

i dont know why people comapre these too. there nothing alike in any way.... both very good..... both fans of each other. Prince obvisouly a fan of Michael and i can tell you that Michael is a big fan of Prince and has several Prince albums in his collection.

i don't think it's cool to perform any Mj songs cuz Mj is a pedophile, i ued to be an mj fan but now my entire mj collection is in a box and im gonna sell it or give it way i was even considering burining it or burying but i dont wanna contaminate the environment.
when did prince perform billy jean, did he sing or just play it? the guitar solo from beat it would be better for prince to play, and the guitar solo from give in to me. Mj's non-album songs highly recommended for those who have never heard them: someone put your hand out, on the line, someone in the dark, also the ultra rare E.T. Storybook album it has never been released on cd its narrated by MJ and produced by Quincy Jones it's awesome. i never got my hands on it it sells really expensive on ebay and mostly from people in europe. also Streetwalker a previously unreleased song from 1987 now on the Bad special edition cd album.

MJ and Prince have to get together one day, on stage, and do "Bad". It's just gotta happen!

I also have never heard of MJ ever making a comment on Prince, but I once read an interview with Bob Jones (in the old Bravo magazine) where he said that Prince once visited Mike during his working on History album and that MIke played some songs to him and that Prince liked them.
Although Bob Jones has not turned out to be the most honest person, I don´t understand what reason he´d have to lie about this thing. "When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."

I´d love to see the two of them together (althoug I think most Prince fans who aren´t into MJ will be like this ) along with Jamer Brown. I think they have shown to us already it would rock! Calm down MJ lovers - if you read what I wrote it means you calling Chris Moon a liar-right? I guess you got closer to Prince than he did, if so would love to hear that story...
I grew up in the 80's and was bigtime in to both MJ and Prince (and still am)... The standard P. line about MJ is "just don't compare me to MJ"...(straight from the horse's mouth- 1988 lovesexy tour (UK), on the tour bus when some fan asked him about MJ). That response isn't overtly hostile, but it's not exactly saying I love the guyy either... Ok, so they're better things to focus on (i.e the great new album) then this topic, but I cpuldn't help being a little shocked to read the reports that he's doing MJ songs on stage, that's all, would love to hear them, see them, hell, I'd pay good money to see P. doing the fucking moonwalk too...

In Moonwalker, MJ walks throught the backstage lot, think hes gettin ready for come together and hes say to Frank Deilo, "wheres bubbles" Frank replies, MJ asks
what hes wearin and frank replies "a prince t shirt", MJ then says "a prince t shirt !" as if to say what the fuck!!! Funny

theres a looong history between these two. i'll post some stories I know, I'm not sure which are just that - stories - or which are 100% true.
Supposedly Prince gave Michael a box with some voodoo stuff in it, it was actually ancient symbols of strength or something but MJ thought it was a curse. Prince later wanted to go out with Janet but she wouldn't cos he played the trick on MJ (so therefore I don't know if MJ just misinterpreted it or P played a full on prank). P had dinner at the Jacksons house, and was flirting with one of MJs sisters, the one who's 'weird' now, begins with a T i think? anyway, Prince licked her ear when he thought noone was looking or something and MJ was actually looking and was freaked out! P has said Jackson 5 were an influence growing up, he also said the reason Bad was called what it was was because 'Pathetic' wouldn't fit on the album sleeve. They have traded veiled/humorous insults on record for a while now, Tony M rapped 'You have to be a prince before your king anyway!' on My Name Is Prince, MJ said something like 'He can give you diamonds and pearls but i can do it better' on some record, Prince then said 'So called king and so called Prince' or something similar on Fascination on The Truth album, in reference to MJ calling his kids Prince. but supposedly P didn't know MJ had named them after his grandfather. hmm...what else? The whole 'bad' song, on one hand Prince said that he wasn't singing 'your butt is mine' and MJ sure as hell wasn't singing it to him, but I think on the Bad deluxe cd with a quincy jones interview it says Prince heard the record and said it was going to be a hit anyway and it didn't need him singing on it. Prince did indeed cover Billie Jean (just the music) at an OZ soundcheck in 2004, and didn't someone joke to him in a club recently he should have done the moonwalk (when MJ played) and he just laughed and walked off or something. so i think he's probably chilled out about the whole thing now. certainly on the musicology tour he did a radio interview and the DJ said what do you think of MJ and prince said 'Genius' and then what about janet and he said 'genious' sister' (sorry for spelling there!). but then on radio around the same time someone told MJ prince had moved to canada and he said 'prince who? the singer' which my friend, who is a hard hardcore MJ AND Prince fan, who was quite 'high up' in the MJ fanclub, says was a definate joke about Prince ie prince would find out and know MJ was taking the piss abit. So they have a long history together, and i'm sure at certain points were jealous of each other and hated the comparisons and probably quite disliked each other. but certainly there seems to be respect, although admittedly it just seems to be prince coming out with it at the moment cf. the name change press interview, where he said michaels a lover not a fighter, but then said we need to make a space for him when he comes home as we don't know what hes going through (or something). so there ya go! anymore stories?

I heard a funny story about how,in 1981,Michael bought a copy of Prince's 'Controversy' album but he had no idea what the last song ("Jack U Off") was about. When his assistant explained the song's meaning to him,Mike said "Only Prince would write about something like that"

I can understand whatever hostility he may have had because the comparison itself is TIRING. It may not have been hostility toward MJ himself, just the comparison. As for not wanting to sound like MJ at one point, that's just standard common sense. How the hell was he going to be "Prince" if he was going to sound like MJ? But that's not the only artist he didn't want to sound like, as I remember. He also did not want to sound like EWF. I have yet to see a Prince versus EWF on this site. Sometimes I think someone should create www.PrinceMJ.org, just so people still comparing them can hang.... away.
