Prince is #12 in UK r'n'b charts......with Emancipation??!?! http://www.bbc.co.uk/radi...bums.shtml
This must be because HMV has been selling it for £1.99. Nice fucking move HMV, now everyone is obviously going to buy Emancipation instead of 3121. I mean, fuck, if I wasnt a hardcore Prince fan, and I walked into HMV today looking to get into Prince, I'd probably choose 3 discs for £1.99 as well!! |

For that price, it should have been #1. "Just like the sun, the Rainbow Children rise."

Sounds like HMV getting their own back - "You saddled us with thousands of these 3CD box that takes up too much room on our shelves and no one wants - now we're going to get our revenge and sabotage your current release! Album you were born to make my arse!"

HMV have most of his back catalogue on sale, alot of albums at a fiver, emancipation at £2.
its really cool i think, though i shudder to think about how much surplus stock they have, i mean, every sale they've done since i've followed prince, from 2001, has had that album at that price. i wonder how many copies you need to sell to get to that position in the charts! Probably just a few hundred or a thousand or so? or maybe a coupla thousand? i'd love to know the figures!

Anyone buying 3121 for £12 or whatever it's retailing at who doesn't already own Emancipation at £1.99 must be retarded. Better to buy six copies of this excellent inspired collection for same price than the latest in line of major label "comebacks". Glug, glug like a mug

I was in London on March 20th (the release date for 3121 in the uk) and I went 2 HMV at Oxford Circus and bought 3121 (10.99£) + Emancipation (1.99£) + 1999 (4.99£)....cheap!
p.s. I already had Emancipation and 1999...just wanted 2 extra copies...4 that price it's cool!

I mean, fookin hell! lots of old surplus stock to get rid of, how low can it go? Emancipation has been going for that price for YEARS. Really tells you something about how "reliable" those sales figures were back then, hm? © Bart Van Hemelen

This must be because HMV has been selling it for £1.99. Then the BPI has been sleeping at the wheel again. These kind of sales normally cannot count towards the charts. © Bart Van Hemelen

If you mean that the number of copies record stores order count for the charts and not the number of copies costumers actually buy, isn't that the case for any album by any artist?

The pre-conception that Prince's output is self-indulgent over-blown pompus tosh would counteract any price tag.

So how expensive does an album have to be to be counted for the charts? I picked up Bowie's "Low" for £ 4.99 yesterday. Just in case, if many people in the UK do the same, do you think the record shouldn't chart?

the price has got absolutely nothing to do with the artist or the amount of copies sold. Emancipation has sold pretty well compared to his other albums because of continuous sale prices in virgin mega and hmv. The fact that is has this exposure is great, warner bros should invest in princes catalogue and reap similar rewards.

i'm not sure of the ins and outs of it, I know billboard often reports an albums rise once its on special offer. for example they might say something like 'green days american idiot rose back to the top of the charts this week, helped by a 2 for £20 offer in retail outlets - or - due to discount price over the holiday period' etc.
I don't know if being £2 would disqualify it. smells like balls to me...

So how expensive does an album have to be to be counted for the charts? The copies of Emancipation sold for next to nothing are the same as cut-outs. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cut-out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cut_out Cut-outs are bad for artists, because a) they don't get royalties from those records and b) those records don't chart. © Bart Van Hemelen
