Black Sweat review on Digital Spy

Prince: 'Black Sweat'

Released on Monday, March 27 2006 - by Miriam Zendle
Prince's latest release is a happy little slice of electro-funk that marks a return to form for the master of funk.

Black Sweat is a really sexual track, which is something Prince has in many ways shied away from in recent years, and conjures up images of Janet Jackson-esque dance moves being tried on in a club. Prince notes this change in mentality when he states: "I don't want to take my clothes off/but I do/I don't want to take nobody home/'less it's you."

48-year-old Prince's voice has managed to remain perfectly the same since his glory days in the '80s, with every vocal nuance being emphasised throughout this track. The music is stripped, the vocals are bare and raw and full of lust and emotion, making the message and the reaction to the track far more intense than if it was clogged with numerous guitars and drums.

As evidence of Prince's conflicted sexuality, this track is a winner, and as a standalone single, it's pretty fantastic too. Don't be too surprised if you find yourself grooving around your bedroom on the third listen. Give it time. It's totally worth it.
