Prince in High School Just a little mindplay here.. can you picture Prince in high school? "Where's that Nelson kid?..basketball practive started... "Yeah, coach is going to be mad at him.. Cut to interior of locker room.. Prince to mirror.."I know I'm the sexiest mutherfucker on the court.. Morris peaks his head from behind an open locker.. "yo Prince!..youre one egotistical brother.. "Morris..I'm going to beat you out for the starting guard position... Prince exits..struts as his fro bounces... Morris turns to Jerome who is also dressed in warmup suit.. Jerome..you got a mirror?.. Cut to high school gym..girls are in stands, excited to see Prince practice..they talk to each other.. Vanity: "that Prince..he's going to ask me to the Prom.. Apollonia.."oh no he isn't..he's going with me.. Sheila E.."have fun at home girls..Prince is taking me... the new girl, who's shy speaks up.."Prince asked me... The three other girls turn and look..in unison, "YOU????" Prince looks up into the stands..smirks at the commotion..licks his fingers, and runs one finger over an eyebrow..then rubs the side of his nose in a Prince way..

I have a very rare book called "Prince: Inside the Purple Reign" by John Bream. It was published in 1984. I thought I'd share what the author wrote about Prince during his high school days for you...
On page 21 it went a little into Prince's personality in school.... "Going from junior to senior high,he seemed to become withdrawn. He'd sit or stand by himself in the cafeteria, never eating but staring at people. He was so queit in the clasroom that some of the teahcers didn't try to get through to him. He didn't participate much in class discussions. Often times he occupied himself making artistic doodles. He neer got into trouble or found himself in the prinipal's office, and he got pretty good grades, seemingly without studing hard. ....In drama-reading class at Central, Prince once put a tack on the chair of an unsuspecting Ronnie Robbins, his R&B guitar rival. Some of the students were aware of it, so when the chubby victim screamed, Prince got a big chuckle.... .....his humor could be sly. His ninth grade algera teacher happened to have a pair of pants that were exactly the same pattern and style as Prince's.'Every great while we'd end up wearing the same pants on the same day', George Headrick said, "and he'd say 'That's a nice looking pair of pants you have on.' Prince dressed pretty much like everyone else. Some days he favored platform shoes, others track shoes. There were shirts with hoods and occasional rhinestones, and his hair was braided into cornrows from time to time. Then on the warmer days you might see him in a tank top with cutoffs, sandals and socks. He did ask a friend, Betsy Smith, to make him a knit hat like the kind Sly Stone wore, sort of a gladiator's helmet with string-straps dangling with huge balls. So she crotcheted him a pink and blue hat like his idol wore..." I hope this satisfied some of your curiousity. He seemed like a pretty interesting cat huh? He definatly would have intrigued me. And omg...Prince in cornrows? WOW!

It's funny, 'cause somehow it's really hard to imagine that the mysterious Prince actually had a "normal" life before he became famous...

Considering the fact that he didn't go to high school all by his lonesome, I'm surprised more stories haven't come out from his classmates..maybe Prince was just like many of us, hating high school, with its cliques, and boring classes, etc..does anyone know if he graduated?

Graduated, 1976. While attending Central he was very active in music, taking as many of these classes as possible. He was a member of the sophomore basketball team and he showed off his talent at the many talent shows. Prince didn’t pay much attention to his academic subjects because, he thought, he didn’t need to because he was going to be a star. He was absolutely right. He has been called a musical genius with hits such as: “Soft and Wet,” “I wanna be your Lover,” “Dirty Mind,” and “Controversy.” The above material was taken from "Tribute to Triumph: Central High School 1860-1982", published by students of Central High School, 3416 Fourth Avenue South, Minneapolis, Minnesota, May, 1982 for the closing of the school. I wonder what songs he played at the talent shows...probably Sly..
