I'm curious - we all want Prince to sound more like he did in the 80's, but what is THIS is how Prince really sounds?

I mean what if the 80's albums were influenced as much by the times and the band members as by Prince himself? This would explain why his stuff sounds so different in the second half of his career.

Think about it - everything from pretty much the last 10-12 years has sounded "kinda" the same, i.e. sounding like the "new" Prince.

I am not saying this as a bad thing, because I like pretty much all of it.

Is this level of creativity and this sound the real Prince, whereas his releases from the 80's had a lot of band input and was just marketed under the name "Prince"?

I ask this because Emancipation, NPS, Rave, the NPGMC tracks, Musicology, and now 3121 all sound very similar in their basic sound . . . obviously some are better than others but not drastically, mind-blowingly different (while his 80's albums each had a distinct sound and cohesion).

Which leads me to believe that this is either the "new" sound that we have to adjust to, or it's all he's capable of writing/performing without considerable band input.

Again, this is not a bad thing. I like it all.

Paul in the Beatles was amazing.

Paul now is still very good but not "magical" like he was in the Beatles, because the times were different then and he also had 3 fantastic bandmembers to contribute.

But post-Beatles, most of his stuff does sound the same (and not much of it sounds like the Beatles).

rememeber that story that after 86 the person we know as prince is realy his bodyu double they used when making Under the Cherry Moon... anyone remember that? that the real prince left and was in hiding?

prince said in thr 1985 rolling stones interview that andre sang and played bass on "prince" ("I wanna be your lover" i think) and in one of the interviews with chris moon prety much said he wrote or co-wrote the songs on the orginal demo tape. (i know he said "baby" was one of the songs.

Well, this is as much truth as it is fiction. He is just able to live outside the world many of us have to face on a day to day bases. Wouldn't we all take that easy road? Would you? I guess I wouldn't. However that knowledge only comes with age. Prince started at a young age, and I think everyone that falls into his place at that age would take that road.

That's what I mean....we can't pretend to know what it's like to be Prince, or vice versa...so we're all the same in that regard..
