The Dance: a new classic

I stated before my thoughts about 3121 are changing, and one of the tracks responsible for that is The Dance.

Right now its my favorite track on the album. Its a very good written song, with a chorus at least (some cuts on 3121 should be a lot better IMO with a real chorus, like Black Sweat for example). And also it has a intriguing arrangement: it combines the 'old' Prince (an electronic beat, screams, melodramatics) with the 'new' one (more traditional / organic sounding percussion, which makes the music sound more 'subtle). Maybe thats why some peeps consider this track 'messy'. I did thought the arrangement sounded a bit 'forced' at first, but after repeated listens its whats gives this song something 'extra': the hooky electronic beat and synth strings, combined with the more fluent latin-inspired cadence, make this song sound fresh to me.

In general, when it comes to songwriting and the arrangement i think this song has the potential to become a new Prince classic. I think it will be on a Prince 'essential' or 'retrospective' in 10 - 20 years.

ok i'm just not getting the love some fans are giving this song, its WEAK. In fact I actually preferred the original. It had more of a melody and more hooks. The production was shitty, yes, but at least it was catchy. The Dance just sounds like a complete mess to me, and i feel it brings the album down a lot. That screaming at the end just feels like an after thought to make the song remotely interesting.

I don't know whether or not it will be a classic, but I can't get that song out of my head.

I would have to agree with you. The Dance is a really beautiful song. It sticks with you, long after it's over.
