Inspiried by the Musicology vs. 3121 threads I decided to start one for two of what I think are some of his best work, Controvery and Dirty Mind. Now this is personal preference and everyone's entitled to their own opinion.

1. Dirty Mind vs. Controvery - Besides the fact it sounds funkier (to me) Controversy's political aspects makes it better than just singing about the sexual aspect of dirty mind
Winner: Controvery

2. When You Were Mine vs. Sexuality - This one is a tie for me, they're both really good
Winner: None

3. Do It All Night vs. Do Me, Baby - Do Me, Baby at that point in his career is probably his best ballad
Winner: Do Me, Baby

4. Gotta Broken Heart Again vs. Private Joy - Private Joy sounds to me like Prince becoming less funky and more into the pop world. I still like the song tho, it almost sounded like it could have been on 1999.
Winner: Private Joy

5. Uptown vs. Ronnie, talk to Russia -
Winner: Uptown

6. Head vs. Let's Work - Very close. They both have just about the same drum pattern but cuz it's more catchier i'll give the win to head.
Winner: Head

7. Sister vs. Annie Christian - Not a big fan of sister, and sense the most common meaning of annie christian is anti-christ ( i guess there was lack of religion in 81, but how would i kno? i wasnt born till 8 years later...) i find it cool for someone to speak out openly about that
Winner: Annie Christian

8. Partyup vs. Jack U Off - I like the guitar in Jack U off and Partyup is pretty good too so this one is a tie too
Winner: None

Overall Winner: Controversy edges out a 4-2-2 win over Dirty Mind for me. I'd love to here some other responses and even some more detailed comparisons from the older listeners and i'm apologizing beforehand if a thread already exists for this.

1. Dirty Mind vs. Controvery ("Controversy" is the better song, but I'm just crazy about "Dirty Mind". Killer title tracks.)


2. When You Were Mine vs. Sexuality ("Sexuality" has grown on me a lot in recent years, but "When You Were Mine" is one of his best songs.)


3. Do It All Night vs. Do Me, Baby (Y'all are gonna think I'm crazy but, TIE.)

4. Gotta Broken Heart Again vs. Private Joy (I've always thought that "GBHA" sounded out of place on "Dirty Mind". It's sweet but not very substantial. "Private Joy" is my favorite on "Controversy". Should've been a single.)

5. Uptown vs. Ronnie, talk to Russia (by a landslide)


6. Head vs. Let's Work (This is maybe the toughest pairing, and again I have to declare a TIE).

7. Sister vs. Annie Christian (I think I'm in the minority that really digs this track.)

8. Partyup vs. Jack U Off ("Partyup" is a killer last track. "Jack U Off" is fun, but kinda leaves me feeling at the end of that album.)

4 for "Dirty Mind", 2 for "Controversy" and 2 ties. Yeah, that sounds about right.

I prefer 'Dirty Mind'.However,I think "Private Joy" is better than anything on 'Dirty Mind'.

Dirty Mind v Controversy its very close though

When You Were mine v Sexuality WYWM nice pop tune Sexuality is a funk punk Diety.

Do it all Night v Do Me Baby

Gotta Broken Heart Again v Private Joy

Uptown v Ronnie Talk To Russia i enjoy RTTR but Uptown is just so funky.

Head v Lets Work both big falsetto songs but the vocal on Lets Work is better imho.

Sister v Annie Christian I think Annie is the weakest track on Controversy whereas Sister has the best bit of screamin'/cursin' ever recorded.

Party Up v Jack U Off i agree with Gangstafam Jack U Off should have been elsewhere in the album or replaced with the original Tick Tick Bang.Party Up is a great track to close an album The defiant chant at the end pretty much leaves Prince with the last word.

Alright, I think I have to create some playlist for my Zen right now...

After all, I would go for Dirty Mind, since it's a flawless album where I would not change a stroke. But Controversy is very, very close.

I think I would have to go for Dirty Mind, simply because it's a perfectly cohesive album. Controversy, while no doubt great, is patchy, if not in quality then in overall feel. i feel I have to change moods between songs like Annie Christian and Ronnie Talk to Russia for it to be coinsidered perfect.

private Joy is a riot though and I love it.
