The Dance

I wish he had stuck the song "the Dance" on Musicology. Now it the lowpoint on 2 Prince records (3121 and Chocolate Invasion). That tedious tune may have actually improved Musicology, thank goodness it did not bring down the Rainbow Children. Here's hoping it is not recorded for his next new record.

I would disagree with you. I think "The Dance" is a sweet song. It might just not be your "Style".
News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so.
You have those internalized issues because you want to, you like to, stop.

Oohhhh! I really like this song. Yeah, I think it's just not your style. But, hey individuality makes the world go round. I am really enjoying hearing what everyone is digging/not digging on 3121. wink

I was shocked at first, but only because I like the TCI version so much. Yet I quickly started to like the 3121 version, which is now stuck in my head.

I don't like either version...The Dance gets the skip from me. shrug
The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

I think he outdid himself on the 3121 version, especially the ending. Took my breath away.

I enjoy being a Prince fan. Just mention a song and you will get such diverse opinions on whether it is one of his worst or one of his best. We all simply cannot agree with each other much at all here at the org. I mean it , it's a beautiful thing, and is a credit not only to Prince's diversity in music and approach, but also to the eccentric varying tastes of those who are followers of such an incredible artist.

I gotta say I love "The Dance". When I saw that someone didn't like it, I sat down and really listened to it and I feel in love. I really feel the lyrics. Now I can't even skip the song.

I'll die before I let U tell me how 2 swim
And I'll come back again as a dolphin

To me "The Dance" as featured on 3121 still sounds like a rewrite
of the original song that he probably submitted for "The Lakehouse"
movie project.

For some reason, this one and probably "Get on The Boat" and also
"Te Amo Corazon" didn't make the final cut of the movie (all the
prince references have been taken away from the film credits 4 now)

Whatever, I just don't like the new version. Particularly not on an
album like this one that sounds completely different up to this cut

"The Dance" kinda comes stumbling into the playlist like a weird n
uneven song that got lost there by accident.

The dance is a fantastic tune, slow to start, building at the end with some classic 80's style prince screams at the end.

Excellent song and easily one of my faves on the album smile

No way I love his overwrought ballads. I t would have been just Ok until the end where he starts shrieking and it gets good, the song flows and then bang. But whats clever is it flows straight into get on the Boat. This song is just too good for 4 anyone 2 doubt it. 3121 is his best album in years and we should all know it!!!

where did you get these ideas from? i just mean with regard to those songs particularly? sounds interesting.

personally i love both versions, i think i probably like the new one abit more though, for more interesting instrumentation.

I'm glad yall people were dissing the Dance because I literally skipped over it. Then I said, let me give it a listen and I LOVE IT! It's one of my favorite songs...this is classic Prince, especially towards the end, this song is GREAT!!!!! Like many people are saying, it left me breathless.

to be honest i just pulled that theory out of my ass

smile

but it seems plausible enough. upon listening to the
new album for the third or fourth time it seemed the
latin tinged songs just stood out.

coupled with the news reports last year of prince in
panama recording some tracks for a project, and the
rumours about his contribution to "The Lake House",
it seemed likely that given the cinematic vibe of a
song like "The Dance", this may be a song from that
project.

a song that got nixed from the movie but that Prince
felt was so good that he just included it on his own
new album.

that seems the most reasonable explanation for why a
song like "The Dance" pops up on his new album when
it was already released on "The Chocolate Invasion".

I can't think of any other instances where Prince has
recycled his own previous songs for a new album.

Anywho, the rest of the album also feels different
from these 3 songs. Take them off and you get one
utterly different record.

Get On The Boat doesn't even feel like a closing song
at all to me, yet it's stuck on there. why? strangest
closing song ever for prince imo.

All the latin tinged stuff on this album feels weird.
They're cool songs, don't get me wrong (altho i hate
The Dance compared to it's original) and I love songs
like "Te Amo Corazon" but they feel off.

just my 2 cents and not saying this is fact or even
close to the truth. it is just the idea i get when i
listen to 3121
and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Agree 100%, although Musicology is fine as it is. The shitty production of the original version sounds right in place on The Chocolate Invasion. The Dance and Beautiful Loved & Blessed are just pointless to me. Ones on Tamars album, the other on The Chocolate invasion. They actually detract from what would have been a tight 10 track album (like back in the 80's). For me The Dance sounds like half a melody he couldnt think how to finish off. He's tried twice, and it sounds less cohesive the second time, so he shoulda given up.

The Dance is a song only Prince fans would like. You couldn't possibly play it for friends who don't like Prince. I think it is the lowest point on the album by far and the Emancipation era melody line near the end seems to be a reference to Mayte.....the whole song just sounds like he is trying to shake a monkey off his back...
