N.E.W.S, 2 buy or not 2 buy?

Ok, here's the deal, I'm thinking about buying N.E.W.S but I heard there R no vocals and the 4 songs each last 16 minutes.

So I'm thinking maybe it'll be 2 boring.
(I heard it's jazzy, but I liked 'The Rainbow Children'.)

So Waddaya think?
2 buy or not 2 buy?

It's like elevator Prince music. The musicianship is good but the musical ideas are just ok. What makes it elevator music is that these ok song ideas are stretched so long your attention just drifts.

I think it makes for good background music...you know for cleaning, reading, studying, etc. Nothing phenomenal IMO, but pleasant.

Good point! When I play it, it's usually because I want to hear some music and I'm too busy to keep loading tracks. So I pop in N.E.W.S and just let it play.

Buy it if you like instrumental music; I do. Plus it's interesting to listen to. Good background music for a dinner party.

I didn't care too much for it. Any song longer than 10 minutes usually loses my attention. The 19 minute version of "Scandalous" is one of the few I love all the way through. I'd buy it anyways because it's Prince.

N.E.W.S is a beatiful record, but I can only recommend to those who love jazz music and who enjoy Prince playing it. West and North are my faves on here.

you can go on newpowerradio.tk and request each track to hear it, then make your decision. Yesterday I heard East and North. I have yet to hear the other 2, but I think I'll buy it.

ImYours

On the one hand, it's a great album, and it's a first for Prince - to record a jazz album under his own name. On the other hand, it's more of a specialty recording, and it's one of 3 (along with C-Note and Expectation), that Prince released (along with One Nite Alone, both versions). People were resisting all this new jazz experimentation, and it was a very interesting period, but that time period has ended.

I had a thought recently. Having just recently bought Expectation and C-Note, I wonder what it would have been like if he had either recorded an double-album with the tracks from all three albums on it, or if he had taken the best of and made it a single disk. I think that might have gone over a lot better. Idle thoughts in my head Saturday afternoon.

I play News on raotation on Saturday and Sunday mornings along with Miles, Coltrane, & Monk.

If you don't like Jazz why buy it?

I heard some of the tracks and they are cool but it would of been so much better if prince sang on it. The only instrumental track I like from Prince (and I think most people here at the org would agree with me) is Alexa De Paris.

Yes, buy it. (I bought two copies: one for me, and one for a Christmas present.) Just don't expect to like it the first time you listen to it. Keep playing it, though; it grows on you.
