Universial Records is THE REAL REASON for Prince's 3121 to debut at #1!!! (Snapz, please read this!) Just so no one get this commentary twisted, I'm very happy of Prince to have a #1 album for the first time in more than 2 decades.
Now lets face reality..... Universal Records (the music industry's beast power) is THE biggest factor in all this. THIS is the same label responsible for marketing just about every mainstream rap artist that you love to hate. THIS is the same label responsible for buying out almost every label that use to be independent (remember Motown, A&M, Def Jam, etc.?). THIS is the same label that owns (that right, OWNS) more than 50% of all CDs & DVDs customer sale. If Prince really wanted every to know about 3121, he knew Universial has the strongest (read: ruthless) marketing power to make even the most bitter Prince-hater know that this album is worth buying! Am I right or wrong? | |

Am I right or wrong? I don't think anyone could be "forced" into liking 3121 or Prince's Music, no matter how much marketing they throw at it. You either like Prince or you don't. I never remember labels like motown and A&M calling themselves "indie labels." NPG Records has a manufacturing and distribution deal with Universal Music. NPG Records retains all rights as to the ownership of the master of 3121. Universal has no rights to the Masters. | |

In Germany Universal did NOTHING...really...
no posters, no ads on radio or tv... The chart position will be good nevertheless... The only promo are reviews in the papers... | |

Bottom line is , at the end of the day it's the consumer who must go out and purchase this record and 184,000 of them did. Universal did a great job getting the word out . But the consumer went out to buy a PRINCE record not a Universal record. People went out and bought the record based on HIS name, HIS music and HIS history.
To suggeset that Universal Records is the sole reason for Prince having a number 1 record I think is misguided. | |

amazingly, while his presence promoting it has been low, i continually see poster ads for it all over NYC. the times square virgin has a HUGE poster with the cover above their doors, and normal sized posters are all over the city on boards. I'm sorry but I think Universal had jack shit to do with this album debuting at number one. I have not seen or heard any promotion outside this webiste and the Club. Prince could have very well released this online, had the purple ticket contest himself and still sold 184,000 copies of it. | |

A lot of CDs sold on the simple fact that Prince's hardcore fan base of at least 100,000 people bought the album. While I have heard from non-diehard fans about the album debut, the SNL thing, I really haven't heard anyone say they wanted to get the album UNTIL I told them that the album is good. yup! here in mpls the most i've seen as far as advertisements go was one big-assed cardboard picture of the album cover at borders bookstore. no placards, no posters strewn all over (y)uptown, none of that. the place i've heard the most about the album is--yup, you guessed it, within online outlets like here on the org and over at npgmc. | |

Contrary to popular belief, Prince knows how to pimp the system. Yes, the same system that's been pimping musical artists for decades. 2 years ago, he did it with Musicology, by bundling it with the ticket prices. This year it's with the purple tickets.
