Interesting thread!
It's quite amazing how he keeps songs "simple" although there's a lot of stuff going on. I would, for example, call TBODP also a minimalist song, even though there surely is a lot in that song. In this case, I think it's great that the "bass" of the bass is completely turned off...gives it a rough edge. I think I read somewhere that it was by mistake, but Prince decided to leave it like that. ...I'd say the total anti-example of this minimalism is Sacrifice of Victor. Now that's an over-produced song! So many voices in there and who knows what kind of noises. I wonder how this would sound a little stripped-down.

'I wonder U'. Definetely. It leaves you yearning for more with that beat. [This message was edited Mon Jul 15 12:21:22 PDT 2002 by Starmist7]

great thread! my fave is one kiss at a time, where prince creates such a full groove using just his voice, some spare synths an very little percussion. amazing. Stand at the crossroads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths...(Jeremiah 6:16) www.ancientfaithradio.com

I love the way Prince uses contrast in his music. The examples listed above are the more obvious examples of P using minimalism.
There are many songs, quite complex ones, in which he breaks down into a minmalistic bridge or middle 8. Last December is a good example Lewis

tiger2 said: how about "bob george"? which pulls off the incredible feat of using the drum beat to function also as a sawn-off blues progression.
now that's econominimical! [This message was edited Mon Jul 15 11:11:30 PDT 2002 by tiger2] Excellent choice! I've always been able to appreciate "Bob George". You know, I didn't really first realize the blues progression for a long time, until I burst into sheer laughter one day. Good modern art is always a good joke, you know?
