Prince is too prolific. Some of the stuff he writes just doesn't seem to have a point.

For example:

Starfish and Coffee
Animal Kingdom
The Other Side Of The Pillow (I mean, it's not THAT cool anyway, the other side of the pillow, sheesh)

The point is that only about 60% of Prince's music is any good. There is a reason all those songs aren't out of the vault. He just repeats himself with ideas that go nowhere until, like any other artist, he strikes a decent song.

So who agrees then, that Prince has written some pretty pointless drivel?

I think it's hard to disagree with, even if some of the drivel is fun or whatever.

I think Starfish and Coffee is a cool little song that fits nicely on Sign O The Times.

And Cool on the other side of the pillow is a nice blusey tune. I listen to it when I'm in the mood.

As for Animal Kingdom (well, er.. um.. yeah..)

I compleatly disagree.

Hey, I might not get the "message" of every prince song, but that is because it isn't written to a vast audience.

Just because you are on the outside looking in, that doesn't mean the song is pointless.

Oh, maybe he could tighten up a little, but so couldn't we all.

Prince songs are often about obvious subjects or things that don't have a very deep meaning. I guess what I'm saying is some of Prince's music is shallow. Imagine in comparison, is not shallow.

So what could be a list of the DEEPEST, most meaningful Prince songs, and please don't say Purple Rain or The Ladder, etc because they are just lighter-waiving songs...

While there are plent of examples of bad lyrics for Prince songs, they are usually the "we're here to party"-types that came out since say 1989 or so. Before that his "party" jams were much better (Lets go Crazy, Play in the Sunshine, Housequake, Its Gonna be a Beautiful night, DMSR etc)

Starfish is a friggin' Prince classic. Its about being the wierd one.

Animal Kingdom is about, duh, animal rights and veganism

and Other Side of the Pillow is a cute little diddy about a great relationship with a real hook.

Well, I wouldn't call *ANY* song pointless. But I could see why you'd say that about starfish & coffee, even though that is one of my absolute faves.

But animal kingdom?!?!?! You don't see a * POINT* there?

Starfish and Coffee has a very good point. It is something like, why be such a little worring human, when this just damppons your joy?
