Love and The Word...overrated ?

I am bit surprised about all the praise going out to these two tracks. I wouldnt say their are bad.

Love has a nice arrangement, but the the melody, is quite mediocre in my opinion. The chorus might be catchy, but the verses sound dated - worn out, like some Britney Spears tune, or, Scream by Michael and Janet Jackson. In a way, it reminds me too much of the lesser dance-pop tracks on Emancipation.

The Word screams ´Prince lite´ to me. The music is almost easy listening, and the horn motif sounds uninspired - middle of the road. Also this track reminds me of the way too polished stuff on Emancipation and New Power soul.

This is my opinion after listening to MP3´s from crappy speakers, so my thoughts might change, but right now i am not really excited about these two tracks.

On some great speakers/headphones, they will definitely stand out alot better. Especially "The Word"

i'm not getting into 'the word' like a lot of people are, but maybe one day it will hit me. 'love', meanwhile, is my favorite from the album so far. nod

I don't see the appeal of either personally, but if others do, good for them!

There are people who get off on girls farting you know - and will pay good money for videos of girls, fully clothed, letting wind. shrug

Couldn't agree more with that statement. They make all the difference. It did with me.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Without them there wouldn't even be an album. This is the best we should expect from him, for some time.

I was listening to my freshly downloaded copy of 3121 and when The Word hit the (lousy) speakers of my (lousy) laptop, I was instantly hooked. It made me want to join the org to read what others had to say about this song. In comparison, I did not enjoy Love half as much!

I must also say that I skipped Satisfied after the first few notes... But I should probably save this for the official stickified 3121 thread.

Cheers,

D.

This is the first time I have heard someone else compare Love with Scream. I keep wanting to sing "Stop messing with me" into Love. SOrta the same kinda vocal inflections. But that's the only similarity, I thin. The rest of it is just great. Esp...the "let's skate" part.

I like the word too. A bit preachy, but I love the hook "come on get up let's do something" as I find roaming in my head a lot.

Underrated...overrated. Nothing's really been rated yet. And it's all subjective anyway,

If there's one track that gets you at first listen, it's The Word. It's probably truest to its artist and where he is in his life...I would guess that's why it resonates the way it does. That's usually how it goes, anyway.

I played a few tracks yesterday for an 8, 11 and 12/13 year old. They all loved The Word and asked to hear it over and over. I asked if they knew what it was about...they all did. And they're not particularly religious. On some level, kids must know best. Maybe they see so much stuff on the news or something and they found that refreshing and "cool" at the same time. I thought that was pretty interesting.

Love is my favorite track on the album. Have listened to it about 100 times already biggrin

The last minute of the song reminds me of Roger Troutman's "In The Mix"..Maybe that's why i'm digging it so much. Damn shame these two didn't hook up and do a few trax.

I don't really get it either. Love sounds to me like a leftover Britney track, complete with "look what I wrote in my diary" lyrics.

I kinda like the Word, at least it delivers a little mystery, something sorely lacking from the bulk of this album.

Aren't the horns in "The Word" sampled from an old house track?

I like "Love."

I don't love it.

Not quite sure why everyone is going crazy over it.

Now, I do love "The Word."

I think Love is one of the most wonderfully uplifting pop songs he's written in years.

As for The Word, I like it quite a bit, but that recurring line about spiders hurts it.

That's really lame.

maybe in these days those moments (the release of a record) dont really count that much anymore... I mean, what is an album? a disk you buy in a record store? the compilation of songs you download from the net?

I mean: in the end you buy a cd for the music thats on it. And when there are 'some' people (lol) in here who have listened to this music for at least 2 or 3 weeks, does it make them less qualified because they listened to song on their PC. Not even the sound quality should have an impact on that idea i think: i mean, good music should be 'good' on itselve, and not depending on the quality of the device or speakers used for listening to it.

"Love", specifically the "like a bird ..." part reminds me of the second part of "The Continental".
This part annoyed me back then in The Continental and it annoys me now in "Love". To me it sounds just so cheesy.
I remember The Continental being mentioned as one of the next singles of the symbol album and I never quite understood why such an average song should be a single.
Apart from this the rest of "Love" is quite funky.

"The Word" is ok.
