I've listened to the new album about 3x today, here is what I think so far. I like the first 5 songs with TAC growing on me. Right now I rank this album somewhere between Musicology and Rave. Does it compare to any album of the 80's? No. It might be one of his best of this decade though. I do think it's better than The Rainbow Children. Worst song on the album has to be "Get on the boat". It's kinda cheezy.

It's easily my favorite Prince album since Lovesexy. Without a doubt (but I'll be skipping Incense & Candles for all of eternity!)... "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

3121 is not my ideal Prince album. For one thing, the "I can do it all" approach in regard to style, although a Prince staple, has become a bit unsatisfying for me, a fan of over 20 years. I keep wishing he'd do a whole album in mostly the same group of idioms, as he did with TRC but, ya know, without the JW-influenced lyrics and perhaps the too-obvious jazz-soul attempt at high brow legitimacy. Which is to say I'm looking for some stylistically consistent album with an eye on accessibility and another on peerless musicianship. But I realize I'm asking for my very own, personalized Prince.
The next best thing might be an album just like 3121. While it is too diverse in terms of style, that is certainly a classic approach for Prince who has built a great part of his legend on his versatility. 3121 is a veritable buffet of styles, and very well sequenced too. Each song has its own feel yet it all flows superbly and ends up feeling like a real album. The listening experience was different from the one I've had since... wow.. has it been over 15 years? I'm a big skipper and I can tell you I'm not shy about zapping to the next song, even after a few seconds. In this case, upon the first listen, I've used the skip button once -- for Incense and Candles. There are other songs that didn't thrill me at first and still don't but I found them pleasant enough to let it play. And now that I've had the album for some time, I still haven't really listened to Incense and Candles but the rest has grown on me considerably with perhaps the exception of Love, which I'm still not sure about. While it's not a landmark album, it is a fun, unpretentious Prince record with a lot of keepers, and that in itself is something, considering this guy is working in the pop arena and has been doing so since the late 70's. I've just returned from Tower Records with my copy. I'm listening to it for the 2nd time. So far, I like what I hear. It's funky, it's sharp, it's sexy and makes me wanna shake my culo. Not exactly a ground-breaking album artistically...but this is clearly a commercial effort on his part. More "Diamonds & Pearls" than "Lovesexy". So far I really, really like LOVE. But this is only my 2nd listening. [Edited 3/21/06 20:25pm] By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory!

I understand the org may have problems with volume; but this is boring and take away from fans individuality. I don't have anything to say about 3121 except that people were correct, the poor sound quality of the leaked Mp3's did kinda spoil it. The album is OK; but I miss reading individual threads with individual titles. This is BORING! My name is Prince and I want your money

As great as the instrumentation and as daring as the conceptual statement is on an album like The Rainbow Children, Prince doesn't seem to be enjoying himself that much, and this is when he is at his best...This is why I dig 3121...He is knee deep in the "Prince" sound amd mystique and is actually having fun again...Say what you want about a track like "Incense & Candles" (Personally, the beat is banging, but the 106 & Park pandering to the kiddies is just a little too much), but the man seems alive...He's getting back to what he does best: Crafting infectious pop and R&B tracks that contain some infectious ass choruses; This is something I haven't heard from the man in ages...Really it comes down to what you like...and I like this Prince... [Edited 3/21/06 6:08am] Correct-a-mundo! What strikes me about so many of the comments, is that Prince's music is more dissected, than plain enjoyed. This album is just meant to be enjoyed. It has energy, drive and humor. The end of "Get On The Boat" where Prince lets out a great "Whooo!". That sounds so GENUINE and real to me. It's been awhile since he's put that kind of enthusiasm on record. p.s.- don't rush to "rank" 3121 in his discography. Let time do that!

Got my copy at Best Buy today..
Favorite Tracks- in the order of preference The Word- If he really wants to "preach" through his music, this is the way to do it Love- I love the harmonies, and the blending of the drum, bass, and synth Fury- Amazing 3121- Very Fonky! Very Smart to lead off with this song. This song creates excitement, and really put me on the edge of my seat to hear the next song. Beautiful, Loved, and Blessed- I'm glad Tamar doesnt sound like Prince on this track. The song isnt overpowered by Prince's musical influence Lolita- Drum/percussion line makes me want to dance, just wish the lyrics were stronger Black Sweat- Should have been longer... The other tracks are growing on me- It was worth the $9.99 The road you choose to walk in this life, is a road that leads to the next.....

As a longtime Prince fan - more than 20 years - I have to say that I am not that thrilled about this album. Black Sweat and Fury are probably my favorites after about four or five listens to the full album.
To me it seems that Prince is uninspired when it comes to recording songs. As of late he only seems truly inspired when performing live. I think that a confluence of things has created this. In general we are living in pretty uninspired times. The world is not a great place. A lot of the hope, energy, and fun of the past have been overtaken by disenchanment and despair. Art and creativity are suffering across the board, and unfortunately Prince is not immune to that. 3121 sounds uninspired to me. He sounds like he is just going through the motions on songs that have the potential to be better. Unlike many, I don't expect Prince to reinvent the wheel everytime he comes out. He's already proven himself to be an innovator, it is part of his legend. However, he is also an amazingly talented musician. All I want is to hear that musician play good music - music with solid melodies and harmonies. The JW stuff is just too heavy handed for me as well. There is also a little too much Tamar on this album. Finally, I really wish Prince would stop rapping. That said, after ripping my two favorites from the disc, I will put 3121 in the rack with Musicology, Rave, Emancipation, and some of the others. Then I'll just wait for another concert to be reminded why Prince is one of the greatest musicians of all time. perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...

It's the bomb. Better than Musicology. <<< I agree. Let me say I don't have it yet, but I've heard Te Amo Corazon, Black Sweat, 3121, Incense and Candles and Let's Do Something. So far, I'm really happy with what Prince has put out. Truly, I started wondering about his releases (and becoming concerned about them) around the time of the Symbol album. But 3121 is positive...some may say commercial, but it feels alive. We need 2 dig the versatility as well; I think Prince really sounds fresh in these songs. That's just me though.

BartVanHemelen said: Translation: it's a decent album if you ignore that Prince is (*) capable of much better. (*) Hmmm, perhaps "was" would be a better choice of words, considering he hasn't released anything in post-1995 that I'd consider better than average, and most of it actually falls in the category "I'll never listen to this again". The only reason so many people here like 3121 now is because it's "fresh" and "new". The same thing happened back when Rave came out, Musicology, etc. Yet ask the same people six months later and they'll rank 3121 along all those other albums that they got tired of pretty fast. I'm just ahead of the curve -- those that were around in 1999 will remember me being the lone voice pointing out that Rave was gonna bomb and that the infamous "positive" Uptown preview of that album actually tried really hard to avoid admitting it was yet another major disappointment (something Uptown admitted months later). Of course so much of this album sounds familiar, for the past couple of years Prince seems to be incapable of doing anything beyond recycling his own music, plenty of times in an attempt to have something similar to an old but now off-limits tune (because of "bad words"). And then the tour starts and before you know it all that "new" music gets ditched and setlists once again consist of 80+% old material -- shows you how much faith Prince has in his new music. Anyone who claims that current Prince is anywhere near classic Prince is blind and deaf, all you need to do is take a dvd of a 1980s gig and compare it to a recent one: it's almost like they're different artists. Cue usual "growth/getting older" excuse, whereas I'll point out that Johnny Cash made some of his best work at the end of his career. If 3121 rocks your world, fine -- but don't pretend that it is worthy of access to the list of "great Prince albums". This is yet another one from the bland manufacturing line, yet another "will this do" effort, yet another utterly misguided attempt at making a return to the charts. Prince can do this in his sleep, and 3121 actually sounds like he recorded it in his sleep. I'm always surprised when I glimpse at tracklists for recent Prince albums and can't even imagine what most of the songs sound like, whereas I know most of his 1980s output by heart. Instead of spending so much time and energy on these mediocre efforts, Prince should concentrate on what's in his vault. Seriously, what's the point of releasing Lolita, which is Time-lite at best, when great songs like I Wonder, Possessed, Rebirth Of The Flesh, Large Room With No Light, All My Dreams, Moonbeam Levels,... are gathering dust in a tape vault. And how about all those extended versions from 12 inches that remain unreleased on CD? Or all those full-length versions of released tracks (Computer Blue for instance)? [Edited 3/21/06 7:05am] There was a time I felt the same way as you. Prince's music was simply not reaching me, let alone move me or inspire me. Almost everything from 1989-2004 sounded distant and phony to me. Like it was all empty bravado, hollow posturing and the only genuine feelings were arrogance and petulance. But 3121 has some verve to it. Musicology was kind of Prince gathering his recent influences together, appropriating them into something with more mass appeal, and 3121 is a progression of this. He's back to being a crowdpleaser, a role he abandoned for an entire decade. The 90s work was not so much crowdpleasing as it was desperate floundering, like he forgot that he's a genius. 3121 sounds like the Prince who knows what people like even if they don't know they like it yet. Musicology was a bit more timid, but 3121 has the old spark, the knowing confidence, the sense of danger and threat coming from a superior talent. Boy knows he's good again.

I'm definately feeling this album. My girlfriend picked up my legal copy last nite so I haven't actually gotten to see the liner notes and what not, but it's mine. I'd have to say my fav songs are: Lolita, The Word, Incense and Candles, and Love. I'm sure they will change once I hear the actual cd and listen to it more.
Can someone answer a question for me though? What is he saying in "The Word" after he says "Spinning them sticky webs around what you do"? I can't make out the first part of the next line. "Ya know what really grind my gears? That Lindsey Lohan" - Peter Griffin

Aerogram said: Hardcore Gimme Prince the Pop Wonder type of review -- more than a few professional and fan reviews are constructed from this Xpectation of Prince semi-reinventing something yearly till the end of his career.
Prince reinvented nothing in 1994 (well, 1993 actually) except himself, and I adore that period of his career. Aerogram said: And of course the obligatory reference to Johnny Cash, probably the only person who kept a degree of cool and relevance over several decades but NOT in the circus that is pop music. That, for me, is very telling, because people can't find another example. The closest in pop is Madonna, and she's (at best) more of a master collaborator/driving force than a total performer/composer like Prince.
Prince's best work dates from when he too was collaborating a lot. Aerogram said: Which is to say that the standard applied to Prince, given his long career, is not only unique but a sign into himself. Because the fact that some people still have that "pop wonder" Xpectation for Prince means he has given them reasons to hope over the years, no matter how small and far in between those reasons have been.

The Police were my favorie group, I dug The Clash; U2 was the shit, RUN DMC were hip-hop Gods; and Rakim was a fucking 'hood griot; But aside from the historical emergence of rap, the Purple Midget, Maddie and MJ were the 3 Ring Circus, and in my humble opinion Prince was the ring leader...The fucking one-man band; the fucking G.O.A.T. of the '80s...It's easy to slight the dude over the past 15 years, kicking the old man while he's down or upright in my opinion (LOL)...But that decade was his...That's just the truth, homie...Fuck the Org.....I would say that shit if I was on a Bruce Springsteen site...
