3121 has finally arrived in the Czech republic and I must say I love the album. Much better than Rave, Musicology and all the other recent stuff. I liked in only after listenining to it twice, which is rare when it comes to Prince. It is great and I really appreciate the fact that Prince sticks to the original musical instruments without trying to sound too "modern" or "in" by using eletronic and over-computerised sounds.

dobry den!

i've thought the same. best thing he's done in 10 years (and yeah, i'm a big fan of TRC)...

Cao, ty jsi z Cech?

What is TRC?

As for the Mj comparison of 3121, there´s nothing that would even slightly remind me of MJ on the album.

TRC = "the rainbow children." definitely an acquired taste, but i dig it.

the one thing that made me think of MJ on 3121 is the verse of "love." not even that?

Nekecej. A kde teda bydlis? Neznam totiz zadny cesky fanousky.

I don´t have TRC. They don´t sell it over here. I once saw it in Prague, but it was too expensive and after listening to if for the first time, I wasn´t as impressed, but hey it´s Prince, you are rarely impressed after first listen. Maybe I should have gotten it. Well next time.

I´ll have to listen to Love again and see if there´s anything MJ-like, but I find it to be a typically "Prince" album.

you really do have to listen to TRC several times to "get it." even more than most prince albums.

For the "sank without a trace": yes indeed, the #3 peak in the UK album chart really isn't a trace, is it? It's only one of the most important charts on this planet...

I'm still waiting for you to explain where the 4.5 million sales outside the US came from. Answer: it's a made-up number. Just compare to D&P.

Prince is a non-entity when it comes to sales nowadays, except for the couple of weeks just after a major release. The ONLY reason Musicology "sold" as much as it did was thanks to fraud (and hype). Did any of the tracks become classics? Are any of the tracks played anywhere on radio still? Does Prince perform anything from it in concert?

Musicology did NOTHING outside the US, except for the bit of chart action in the first few weeks after the release, when all the old fans hear Prince has a new album out, read the ridiculously upbeat reviews, go to the stores, buy it, listen to it once or twice and then put it on the pile of CDs that will gather dust in the next couple of years.

Look at how much the low-key albums sell: next to nothing.

That's why the $100 million contract was such a joke: it required Prince to sell at least 5 million of each album in that deal, which would be ridiculous since at thta time the only album to reach that mark in years had been D&P, and he had to promote that album like he never did before.

Prince is a non-entity when it comes to sales, except for the occasional blip on the radar when they pull out all the stops -- and then there is NO momentum, no follow-up.

I think you give radio too much credit. Of course Prince isn't having singles success anymore. Radio in America is controlled by Clear Channel. Regardless of quality, Prince will not have his new songs played on the radio. If you're listening to satellite radio, then yeah, they play the hell out of Black Sweat. The music business is basically a dead whale because of video channels not playing videos, radio stations playing the same 8-10 artists over and over, and the internet letting people get music for free. It's not like the old days. Prince having a #1 album these days is a great achievement. Two years ago, he had a double platinum album as well and a incredibly successful concert tour. I'd say the past few years have been wonderful. Stop being so mad at Prince for shutting down fan sites years ago. Let it go man.
"You don't exist again. It's all taken away from you. Even for the richest, happiest and most beautiful people, they move into later life and get old where things start to break apart. They don't exist anymore and they will never exist again." Woody Allen

3121 in my opinion is a strong start, first thing i thought is that the bazz/drumz sound like or have been taken from - days of wild (is this right, seeing as sunny and micheal b are credited?)

My first thought was the same. After some searching throught the backcatalogue I found it. It's the bass and beat from 'funky design'. ('Just when you thought it was safe to go outside').

well getting back to the core of this thread, I've listened, and try to listen again, but I just don't hear it.

if this is THE prince come back, well he can just go away again, as far as I'm concerned. Nothing on this album appeals to me at all, I think it's all a bit tired and dated stuff that's he's producing, and some of his ballads are just droney and non melodic. I think the commercial success of this album speaks volumes about it's content, and rather than being fresh, it just regurgitated old stuff.

I'm sure there will be people who say give it another listen, it will grow, but that was never the case with sign of the times, parade, even up until his emancipation Cd which was flagging stuff. I think prince needs to stop releasing tunes, until he's written something worth releasing again. I'm putting the CD in the bin.

No one said it's the THE prince comeback, just another step in his emergence from oblivion. If the album was a downer for you that's too bad.

I won't tell you to give it another listen but I'm sure you will. And when you do, why not try listening it to it somewhere you usually don't listen to music?

Change of scenery helps jostle the dreary mindset.

Hindsight is 20/20. I adore the eighties albums as much as anyone on this board, and was there for all of them. But only Purple Rain and Sign O' The Times were instantly recognized as classics upon release.

Parade, one my favorites of all time, was met with a lot of confusion despite the #1 "Kiss". Rolling Stone panned it, UTCM the movie didn't help matters, and Prince himself did something he'd never done before in an interview afterwards: he agreed the album wasn't up to snuff ("I didn't have enough good songs ready and I'll never let that happen again" or something to that effect).

Every new song is grilled to death these days. But who was blaring "Do U Lie?" out of their boomboxes in 1986? Is that on anyone's iTunes playlist today?

Please don't get me wrong, I love that in the context of the album and am not saying he's releasing anything like Parade these days. But we used to give many Prince tracks a free pass because we understood that for every genius moment, you had to let Prince experiment to get there.

I think whatever he did on 3121 is worth "The Word" and a few other songs, and no wonder he's reviving older sounds. No one seems to want to give him any room to move. Tough fucking crowd today.

One of the most eloquent, well-thought-out statements I've read on the Org in a long time...I remember those days as well...The old man is definitely trapped in a catch 22....I mean Dylan doesn't even have to deal with the type of unreasonable expectations that Prince goes through...I think it really comes down to your musical relationship with the man...I dig the album for what it is...A solid statement from a veteran artist; i guess some folks can't get past the man's legend...

Thanks.

I think those of us that were teenagers back when Prince was almost always on top have a hard time with getting older ourselves and put a lot of pressure on him to make us feel that way again. Whenever he comes close, I'm grateful, especially right now. But I can't imagine what that pressure must feel like. He's almost 50.

Just remembering that when some of those albums were current, people were just as passionate with their bitching. In 85 and 86, it was all about Prince not giving us the rock and funk album we deserved from him; many fans were NOT feeling the psychedelia and pop. That's partly what drove Prince to get extremely confused in the Lovesexy/Black Album years about what persona he wanted to put out there, and I think, IMO, that's what got us Tony M and Goldnigga shortly after that.

He does listen to us, somehow. I just don't think that's always a good thing.

So true. He's been fighting the same battle for 20 years. But he's celebrated for taking chances. I hated prince when it came out, now it's maybe in my top 5.

I think he always hears the criticism and he always responds to it, just not the way everyone wants him to respond. He's obsessed with his image, but who's opinion should he trust? Certainly those around him are gonna kiss his ass, so it's a tough call.

I think he got it pretty good this time, even though 3121 probably isn't a true classic.

You don't have to be a teenager to be excited and giddy about Prince music. Young hearts are definitely easier to please but that doesn't preclude seasoned listeners from joining in the fun.

It's interesting, the progression we make as human beings. As adolescents we find our peculiar niche and our own heroes, then we gradually expand our sphere of interest. Though it may be a little bit scary to go outside our comfort zone, it's also thrilling and we feel like a kid all over again.

I think Prince is experiencing something akin to this, and I hear it in the music. He's revisiting familiar sounds, yes, but he's got new wisdom, new perspective and new themes to share with us.

Honestly i would have to agree...dont get me wrong i LOVE the album...but most of the songs had to grow on me and i juss dont feel like things should have to grow on u i think it should just click...and not to bring up the cliche comment, but his old stuff didnt really have to grow on u it would juss get u dancin...and i'm not asking for the old stuff back becuz what would be the point in bringing back something that has already been done and not growing from there...but i dig the new beat and some of the stuff he is experimenting with...i think he will come up with so much more in future albums...but i was expecting a little something different from him...but u cant always get what you want out of people...or should i say Prince haha

My favorite music usually has to grow on me. I find when I like something right away that I like it less & less eventually.

You really either immediately dug or never dug the weird stuff from 85-88?

yeah....i understand where u coming from cuz now that i think bout it my all time favorite songs grew on me becuz if some songs click they usually get old relle quick...but thats just nowa days cuz they been playin music out so fast lately... it kindda gets me upset cuz my generation is forced to listen to stuff that really speaks of nothing and i think i'm used to songs clicking becuz another thing with my generation is if it doesnt click right away they usually give up on it..i'm glad i take time wit my music and i like different things then other people rather then just go along witht he crowd..so its a good thing his album grew on me becuz alot of great music usually does.....good point!
Nothing about me is FALSE...thats why my love is REAL

Some say the album was redundant and a bit cut and dry.

Prince's religious beliefs a bit too extreme.

I know what you mean, BabyImaStar1. I feel the same way about songs clicking instantly. Give it a listen, let it seep in, and if there's good chemistry, stick to it.

I've always trusted my instincts and my intuition--always been a first impression freak. When I like something immediately I usually like it for good. And I like 3121.

But I'll tell you this: Even with stuff I clicked with on first listen, there were bumps along the way, hard times where I would question if I liked it at all. Sometimes it feels like too much work and I go "Agh! I need to get away! I need to hear other musicians. We need a break!"

I say if you really love an album, set it free. And if it comes back to you it was meant to be. wink

well getting back to the core of this thread, I've listened, and try to listen again, but I just don't hear it.

if this is THE prince come back, well he can just go away again, as far as I'm concerned.

I always liked Do U lie and remember how silly I felt when I saw it panned, when it was originally released. It IS on my iPod.

You speak the truth about the initial reception of Prince albums. ATWIAD and Parade got panned. Even SOTT was panned by some -- if I remember correctly, RS or some other big mag wasn't too hot for it.

I bought a copy just to have the smallest chance for concert at his house and having seen SNL Fury I thought it might actually be worth 9.99 euro's. The first song came on in the car, liked it very much: 3121 is like P-Funk.
The rest though doesn't appeal to me at all. Perhaps in concert some songs will grow on me. But for the time it's just only slightly better than the Musicology album (which I got at the concert for free, wouldn't have bought it)

Prince only rules on stage.

"I think those of us that were teenagers back when Prince was almost always on top have a hard time with getting older ourselves and put a lot of pressure on him to make us feel that way again."

This is an interesting comment, as for me, i got into prince's music retropsectively, i was listening to the likes of 1999 and graphitti bridge when symbol came out, and started buying up old albums at that time, so interms of prince's chart popularity I've never been particularily interested in that.

For me, the first couple of albums aren't great, but I'm really into the musicianship of them, i beleive prince was much more into doing it all himself on those two. Even around a world in a day sucks really, but that could be becasue I never bought it when i was being fanatical about his work, and proably never got attached to any of the tracks. I guess the greatest body of work for me was the very funky graphitti bridge, parade, lovesexy and sign of the times. Though to contradict all that as a live performer, prince realy does turn it out what ever he's playing, and I guess that what always brings me back to him.

i listened to rave unto the joy DVD the other day, and I thought, damn, why isn't studio stuff as good as his live sets anymore.

I really love the title track - best on the CD by far - the type of tune I love Prince doing. Lolita is catchy and sounds fresh. The rest of the album ranges from pretty good to not all that for me. A nice and enjoyable listen, but I prefer Prince when he's pushing boundaries, creating new sounds and not trying to please a wide audience.

7/10
