HERE'S THE ULTIMATE TEST FOR ANY RECORD BY ANYBODY---WOULD YOU BE EMBARRASED TO HAVE IT CRANKED IN YOUR CAR WHILE YOU ARE AT A STOPLIGHT?

I DID THIS TEST WITH 3121, AND I HAD TO TURN IT DOWN, I FELT VERY UNCOOL.. HAHA

This happened to me, and I was a bit embarassed. Not by the music, but because I realized it looked like I was trying to impress someone by blasting Black Sweat, when I was really just enjoying it.

I thought the music sounded cool, actually (something I haven't felt with Prince for a while). I'd blast the song 3121 no problem.

I agree 3121 (the song) definitely passes the test! "Black Sweat" is trying to copy a few songs, so it probably passes the tes, except for that bad high pitched line. He was going for that crunk sound, but he got that sound that makes your ears hurt.

why the number 3121? well, numerologically speaking, 3+1+2+1 = 7, which is Prince's Chaldean Numerological number, him being born on the 7th of June and everything.

Also, if u check the book 'The Secret Language of Birthdays', June the 7th is apparently the day of 'the Entertainer'.

hmmmmm.

best tracks? well, i can't get te amo corazon out of my head, but occasionally i find myself channeling Obie 1 Kenobi and singing 'te amo Coruscant'...

lolita is too catchy, ace shouts from the NPG!

3121: echoes of christopher tracy's parade in the keyboard brass fanfares, shame they weren't orchestrated by Clare Fischer.

black sweat = hot thing + kiss

'Train' off of dream factory is a better song than *most* of these.

incense and candles: why the need for the autotune plugin?

Love: (sexy). Where're all the exhuberent Fairlight keyboard solos? (Sorry, big selling pop albums don't accomodate these frivolities anymore....)

Satisfied: (with the NAACP version - why not drop the live version in the manner of Beautiful Night....)

Fury: hmmmm.... most people would say '^^^'. 1st time i heard it was at the Brits and it rocked then..... (on telly, i wasn't actually there)

The Word: ah, that'll be about jehovah then. Good chorus though. Good song all round really.

BLAB: I rate this better than Fury actually. Make of that what u will. I'm curious to see what her album sounds like. If that was her accompanying Prince on Purple Rain at the Brits then she added a very soulful voice indeed. I'm sure that wasn't the one criteria that warranted producing a whole album....

the Dance: I haven't heard the npgmc version. I don't like the keyboardstyle production on this, but that's a very impassioned vocal per4mance 2wards the end.

Get on the Boat: 2 be honest i prefer Prettyman, it's much cheekier. And doesn't sound anything like this. Are y'all tone deaf?

Overall: i still can't get my head round that cover of every day is a winding road. it's been 7 years and it still makes NO SENSE WHATSOEVER!!!

I love the whole album, its really a celebration. Different musical styles throughought.

1. 3121 - Fun!
2. Lolita - Lovely jam, a tiny bit creepy.
3. Te Amo Corazon - Mellow sensual.
4. Black Sweat - I play this over and over. Amazing tasty goodness. Dang!
5. Incense and Candles - When he says 'yes' at the beginning? Shiver.
6. Love - Solid song.
7. Satisfied - Oh. Man.
8. Fury - Growing on me.
9. The Word -- Exceptional. It feels like it comes from a honest place.
10. Beautiful, Loved & Blessed - Chorus = excellent.
11. The Dance - Like this one the more I listen to it.
12. Get On The Boat - I REALLY REALLY love this song. I can almost hear it live.

The Word is exceptional. It comes from a place that it is really honest. Wow.
Love wins. (Seen on bumpersticker)

I have been listening to this cd all week. My opinion is that this record is his best in over a decade. It's nice to see him have fun with the music again and I love all the songs. Some more than others but I would take another five records like this anyday!!

In the music it sounds like Prince is having fun again. If he goes on tour with the music from this c.d and only this c.d. I would be first in line. He is gonna kick ass on stage. It will be short but, so what. Always leave them wanting more. 3121 is not a Masterpiece like R.C. however, it's a retro return to form with a contemporary sound that lets me know as another poster said up above, that the man could do this in his sleep. I missed this Prince and can't wait for my solid Rock Album that I know is coming in the near future. So for now 3121 is satisfying. Unlike Musicology. He is focused again.

For me I first thought that it was sorta tame but the more I listen to it I hear how great the instrumentation is. I really like Black Sweat, I think it is funky and despite like some others sorta having fury ruined for me initially the more I listen to it the more I like the album cut also.

I also truly adore Te Amo Corazon the more I listen to it now. It sounds so pretty and well done.
It has a nice melody to it.

I like BLB also and this is the first time i'm really hearing it well because I thought the performance on SNL wasn't that clear to me as far as soundwise.

Lolita is interesting sounding along with incense and candles which I think may be a tad repetitive but sounds interesting to listen to. I haven't really listened to them and Get on the Boat, The Dance, and The word enough yet to truly have an opinion on them yet.

3121 after getting used to what it was and what's going into the track has become very enjoyable to hear to me now and has really increased in favor.

After I listen to The word, The Dance, Love and Get on the Boat i'll be back with my true opinions of them.

Satisfied I love. I initally sorta liked it some first hearing but right now I just like the Jazzy, bluesy feel to it. I've heard people say its On the Couch Pt. 2 but if is I think its better.

Anyway as a whole i'm liking it much better than initially and could grow as time goes one.

Initially I thought it was a 5 but now a 6.5 inching towards a 7 which is what I view musicology as now. I'm gonna keep listening and see what happens.
"Why'd I waste my kisses on you baby?" R.I.P. Prince You've finally found your way back home. Well Done.

For years, I'd wanted Prince to do an album that built off his strengths, heralded willingness to take risks, his versatility and his ability to craft commercial, clever gems.

I think he comes a lot closer to doing that with 3121 than I've heard him do in recent efforts.

Detractors have lamented the use of "contemporary" sounds. On "Love," you hear textbook Prince -- I even detect the bridge from "We Can Funk" on there -- but mostly with modern production. With different production, it'd fit right into Controversy, to me. I think the production is the weakest part of the album, actually. It absolutely ruins the atmosphere potential on "The Dance." Cheap, keyboard strings and sloppy percussion -- Prince should have used musicians for that. That song's intro suggests to me that ol' boy is sleepin' way more than he used to. Or was rushed.

The only other complaints are minor: I haven't liked his rock guitar tone since TGE. It's too generic and over-processed, these days. I miss the "SOTT" molten glass tone, for sure (ICNTTPOYM video/Just My Imagination, for clarification).

I don't care much for Tamar's voice. (But, she's still beautiful...) Which make me wonder what Prince sees in her. Maybe it's just her time, simple as that.

But that doesn't stop me from wishing that he'd gone Santana on us during "Get on the Boat." That song begs for a stanza of shredding.

The upside: I love "The Word."

I'm hearing early Clapton on "Fury," (though the SNL performance spoiled me).

I love the melodies: "The Word," "3121" and "GOTB" suggest to me that Prince has been listening more to swing, early blues and folk. With different production, some of those songs are melodic ringers for roots music. Several nods to the blues on this album. I love that.

Prince is singing so well on this album, it's a trip.

If Musicology and the tour were what he needed to rediscover passion, bravery and his sound, we're all the better for it.

Final quibble: I would love to hear a "Love" remix with a Linn program. I miss those distorted toms. (Prince, if you're reading this, hop on that for a brother, wouldya? Thanks, TB)

Alright, I'm on Day 3 of listening to 3121 casually... and while I knew that I liked it instantly, it just gets better every time I listen to it.

3121, Lolita, Incense and Candles, Love, The Word, and The Dance are all fantastic songs, and easily the best he's done in such a long, long time. The great part is, none of these songs sound labored - He sounds relaxed, yet adventurous.

Even ones that I was lukewarm toward are seriously growing on me, and are becoming fairly enjoyable (Te Amo Corazon, Get on the Boat).

I don't really have much of an issue with Satisfied, as Prince always seems to need one "Slow Love" styled song on each record, and despite being a fairly "meh" track, Satisfied fits the bill.

3121 is definitely my favorite record since Chaos and Disorder - There's so much spark, energy, and honesty here. It's refreshing.

They're funny and deep. A lot of wisdom seems to come from comparing and combining religious passion with earthly passions.

Who would think that LoveSexy from a 48 year old is actually quite a lot more exciting than a teenager's erotic fantasies (even Prince's smile)!

Horrible horrible horrible -- glad I didnt buy it.

My review:

1. 3121 - best song on the CD, if it was longer I would have bought it
2. Lolita - good song until the lame call-and-response segment -- using this title does Nabokov an injustice.
3. TAC - boring boring tedious, dull - instant skip track
4. Black Sweat - lame and tedious, instant skip
5. Incense and Candles - interesting vocal gymnastics, hardly great enough to warrant buying the CD
6. Love - boring, skip
7. Satisfied - good song, I like it but doesnt warrant me buying the CD for it, if it was longer, like the title song, Maybe I would have
8. Fury - boring, SKIP
9. The Word - interesting, the 2nd best thing about this CD, but tedious after a few listens
10. B,L, & B - ZZZZZ SKIP
11. The Dance - good song with the disadvantage of being sandwiched between two sucky songs.
12. Get On the Boat - Vegas horn fills, and tiresome Sheila E. timbala patterns

My only question is, what happened to the funk?

Either you have a twin on the Org. or you are on some Sybil shit...I'll take the latter....(LOL)

Excerpt from your earlier Post: "I listened to BS, Fury and the Tamar song mny times before deciding that they were pedestrian romps. The rest of the album i find to be a huge leap from the sterile boredom of Musicology."

-----
Come on dude...if you hated he album the first time around, I wouldn't even have to pull your card...But your review doesn't exactly fall in line with your earlier critique...Right now, you are doing some serious trolling (LOL)....Who are you trying to impress????...I've always been the type of cat to take up for folks brave eneough to profess their dislike for the midget's work on the Org...It takes guts...But this shit is on some of the most blantantly phony, starving-for-attention, self-serving bait I've ever read on this site...For real dude, it's a little tired...

I got sucked in by the newness of it, then, the more I listened to it, the more I realized that it is shallow, sterile, uninventive and reeks of Princely ennui . . . so, opinions, in your rationale, cannot evolve? They have to stay static? Nope, unilke 3121, my thoughts have a dynamic to them . . . .

3121 has the distinction of being the first Prince CD I did not go out to buy . . . right now I am playing Miles Davis's Cellar Door sessions which places Prince's lame funk into a pitiful squalor.

Now now, dont be mad, your hero may come back some day. As long as YOU like 3121, what do you care what I think anyway?

Hi...

...my comprehension of english language must be limited as it's not my native...

...but what is so shocking about "the wall of Berlin stuff" ? Doesn't that only mean "when people want 2 be happy they are ready 2 do anything ?"

We sure can still discuss about "are former eastern german happier 2day ???" which is not indeed the subject of the song !

Please explain me your point of view in an easy english !

"It's going down, like the wall of Berlin"
Just such an out of date reference. How long ago did the Berlin Wall come down !?

Trouble with us Prince fans is we have such varied taste. Some people want him to make a White Stripes album, others want a hard funk album !
All I want is a quality Prince album.
He's never sounded like anyone else, so I don't know why people want to compared him to Miles Davis or The Pixies!!? That's not the style music he does, and never has. If you prefer those artist, then good for you.

3121 is about as close to a classic Prince album (Parade, ATWIAD, SOTT) as he's come in a while. A few lame lines, some irritating raps, but overall it's pretty good.

3121 is a very pleasing record. Classic Minneapolis sound. I like how the songs just get to the point, like Lolita and Fury, packing a punch without extended intros or segues. The arrangements and ideas are succinct and palatable, like the best Prince songs.

I don't like the idea of him limiting himself either, but really, how much swearing is there on Parade, or ATWIAD ? Doesn't mean the songs have to be bad. He actually, kind of, swears on Lolita, "I must admit, long time ago, we'd be the sh..." lol

aw dude, you must appreciate the brass balls of a man who sings about fucking and has fucked many a young nubile and now claims he won't give in to temptation. He plays it off like he's moral but he's just being a tease. It's audacious and hypocritical and sanctimonious and coy all at the same time.

And I think it's rock 'n' roll.

Can you imagine fine young womens at his concert hearing him sing "You'll never make a cheater out of me?" It's a come on. It's a challenge. He's inviting more groupies.

I see you standing with your back on the wall.

Listen... I have been such an uninterested, former hardcore Prince fan for so many years now. I used to be such a naysayer on this board. I thought (and still think) Musicology was a snore (aside from Illusion, Coma)... I loved a few songs on Rave, but hated the whole package. "Baby Knows" still makes me a little nauseous. I was firmly in the camp of fans who feel that most of the nineties work (and since) has been a rehashed, overproduced shame.

Unlike Bart, feeling like that left me with no desire to come and post about it. Why would I? I have been perfectly happy listening to my 140% complete back catalog, alone, and hoping that Prince, some day, would listen back to "Lady Cab Driver" or "17 Days" or "Crystal Ball" and get reinspired. Besides, I listen to quite a lot of other music, constantly, mostly indie and dance. Dwelling on Prince's current releases has just been depressing, except for a few bright spots along the way.

I think of 3121 as a supernova.

The new album has fucked up all of the last twenty-four hours for me. I can't get any work done. I have other new CDs that I haven't listened to yet, and maybe won't get to for a while.

So I was pretty surprised to log on to Prince.org, confident that I'm going to the one place where 3121 will be nothing but celebrated, and people are actually saying they're not feeling "Love"?

I am so happy I came to this with fresh ears. I mean, whatever, I've been listening to old Prince as much as ever, but I haven't been on the boards, I haven't been seeking out leaks, and I haven't been talking to anyone about Prince. SNL and the "Black Sweat" video got me a bit excited, but otherwise I've just been reserving any anticipation.

I did that because I figured I'd be disappointed, and because discussing and criticizing Prince as obsessively as I used to... it eventually robbed me of objectivity and I found, especially with Musicology, that the worst had happened: the whole world loved a Prince album that I didn't give a shit about.

So let me tell you where people ARE feeling 3121: out here, in the big world. Check out the other thread for a bit, you know, the one that has all the media reviews. Balance out the point of view. Prince does indeed fit into the current musical landscape. He's not going to be just ours anymore, at least for a while. "Incense and Candles" is a far, far more competitive and current song than most fans seem to be comfortable with. Here's some more news: Prince may not be the first to vocoder his vocals, but I&C contains probably the most understated, graceful, appropriate, and beautifully produced example of it in any R&B song I've heard recently. How can you not raise your hands and sing along with "I'm-a wannit all night long?" How can you not feel that rat-a-tat drum break at 2:02?

"Love" is the song I feel like Prince promised me, way back in 1988. And he f**cking kept it. My most played. The most driving mix yet of the familiar with the totally unexpected. The very first Prince song that made me get up and dance on first listen in probably over ten years. Let's skate.

And when has he been as loose and funny as on "Lolita"? I know the song is totally retarded. But I also think it's totally excellent. This is the same Prince that used to yell out "Fishtail!" and s**t like that. You didn't smile at 0:01 when that synth line came in? You didn't shout when you heard Prince taking back that call-and-response that he gave the Time in the first place?

Even though I'm playing "Love" the most, the song I am probably most blown away by is "The Word". Aside from being (what I think is) his most beautifully produced single track ever (headphones, headphones, headphones), it's the first time I've heard such a religious song from the Jehovah Prince that still felt emotional, resonant, universal. He's never sung verses like this. The arrangement is so beautiful. I couldn't believe Prince played that horn, too, I thought it was Eric Leeds or something, with Wendy on acoustic guitar... this sounds like the Revolution would have sounded in 2006. Bliss. Um, and the scream at the end?

Yes, I have my little critiques (I didn't really need "Satisfied", as great as his vocal is)... but this is my whole point. I would hate to think that my dislike of a corny synth fill here or there would distract me from the fact that 3121 is easily Prince's most fresh, accessible, and yeah, brilliant album in years and years.

If you're too close, man, back up and give yourself some air. It's okay to love the f**k out of this joint. It really is.

You are high on something, brother. This CD has no BALLS! I dont want Prince hobnobbing with fucking Oprha Winfrey and Ellen, or throwing dated references in songs ("put down your cell phone") . . . or not swearing, how lame is that? Be funky, crazy, throw out jams as you see them, mile-long jams that alienates the lame-asses that approve of your geriatric outings . . .that Black Sweat video is beyond lame.

Goddamn Prince, what an embarassment!

aw dude, you must appreciate the brass balls of a man who sings about fucking and has fucked many a young nubile and now claims he won't give in to temptation.

That's some wicked shit right there.

EXACTLY. He's still the same snotty, sexy, pimp-ass, frustrating and irresistible motherfucker he was in the Dirty Mind days. In those days, nobody was running around in their underwear, singing about giving head and jerking a guitar off in everybody's face. So he did it. Nowadays everybody in their mother wants to be dirty and it's no rebellious thing. So now he's got another spin on it, and it's just as frustrating to people now as the black bikini briefs were to others in 1980!

I usually wait a couple of weeks to review any new album, but my initial 3 day impression of 3121 is that it's his best "Prince" album, from start to finish, in years. It has everything you expect in a "Prince" album - rock, funk, pop, soul, quirkiness, seduction, spirituality, all in the right balance. 3121, Love, The Word, The Dance - early standout tracks for me.
