Which Is Better: "All My Dreams" or "Get On The Boat"?? But seriously, which one of these songs can be said to be legitimately better than the other in your eyes? And most importantly, why??... It's not just about which one you like better, but about explaining how Prince succeeds more in one song than he does in the other, whichever one you prefer... There's a reason for me asking this...kind of a "study"..lol

"All My Dream".
Because it is. • Did you first think Prince was gay? •
Wendy: He’s a girl, for sure, but he’s not gay. He looked at me like a gay woman would look at another woman. Lisa: Totally. He’s like a fancy lesbian.

honestly, boat, only because it has a better sound and beat. Power tends to corrupt; absolute power corrupts absolutely. - Lord Acton

Shit, this is a tough one because "All My Dreams" is one of those very few Prince songs that I think are horribly overrated by the fans, and "Get On The Boat" is hardly the new "It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night" as one of our fellow orgers described it after the prelistening parties. It isn't as fluent a groove as Prince would like it to be, but then again...
I'd still go for "All My Dreams", if just for the "cap'n'crunch" lyric alone.

Prince can do "Get On The Boat" in his sleep, and he's repeated that style many times over
but he needs Lisa & Wendy for the very colorfully produced & arranged "All My Dreams" seriously -- no comparison

And am I the only one who hears more Staple Singers in GOTB than I do James Brown??...

You are so right about that statement of yours that you couldn't even imagine yourself how right you are.

On my dreams is an overrated tune. Really embarassing in fact. Ridiculous arrangements. W&L have had a terrible influence on this track.
Get on the Boat is a good solid jam that will (I'm sure) be very special and powerful on stage. get on the boat is far better. " Je serai toujours de retour bande de mods à la con de mes deux " Moi - 2007

Interesting difference of opinion here.
I'm one of those who think All My Dreams is among his dreamiest tracks. What a gorgeous and fun little journey that one takes you on. When a song takes me for a "ride" I am nothing short of grateful to the artist - Dreams is that sort of trip

ive always found drems very overrated too, but saying stuff like that can get you killed in this forum.
i am not a big fan of either, but get on the boat, despite the religious lyrics which dont thrill me has a pretty infectious beat Power tends to corrupt; absolute power corrupts absolutely. - Lord Acton

I agree with Rudy on that. Songs should take you on a some sort of a ride/trip whatever you wanna call it. AMD does that. I also agree it is somewhat overrated. It is pretty silly in some places but that it's charm. Also it's very "colorful" which isn't a word I use to describe a lot of newer Price tracks. GOTB is good for what it is. It's just kinda expected. AMD is kinda like WTF is this? For good and bad reasons. Really though these 2 songs couldn't be any farther apart. I think we are talking more Prince periods here than actual songs. Fantasy is reality in the world today. But I'll keep hangin in there, that is the only way.

Study this, bitch: All My Dreams is one of the best songs Prince has ever done. GOTB is merely okay. "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

All My Dreams is much more entertaining in it's intention, and it has the whole "play my record double speed" element to hear the slowed down vocal more clearly (pop the record from 33 to 45 maybe?). so you have the interaction of a hidden type message combined with a surreal production/sfx, and a loose (untightened) snare drum sound that makes it funky... and it's bootleg... and if you really want to get into the whole unintentional conspiracy aspect of this BEATLES genre of making music interesting... it hints that someone might have got pregnant....
when I played "All My Deams" for friends back in 1989 off of a vinyl called "charade", they all thought it was scary because it sounded so wild and bizzare... It almost has a "Price is Right" gameshow quality to it! My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

Takes you somwhere. Get on the Boat is well, expected and to me, not very interesting. It's good for what it is but that's not saying much. It's nice for a minute. Fantasy is reality in the world today. But I'll keep hangin in there, that is the only way.

All My Dreams by a couple of lightyears.
Though I love Get on the Boat, it is much more conventionally derivative than All My Dreams. It's a great JB homage, but it's much much "by-the-book" than say, Housequake. All My Dreams is a unique Prince concoction. Though you can hear the influences, it is anything but "by-the-book" and it is wildly imaginative, at least compared to Get On the Boat. [Edited 3/18/06 11:20am] Yes. It's really not fair to compare the two. They are in two completely different worlds. Maybe comparing Get On The Boat with It's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night would be more appropiate if we're comparing then and now material. Of course Get On The Boat is more akin to the more recent stuff like Prettyman, Musicology ,The Work etc, but that's stating the obvious. Fantasy is reality in the world today. But I'll keep hangin in there, that is the only way.

Prettyman still has creative futuristic Prince production touches... unlike say "the Work"

All My Dreams is better just for the climactic ending..
"Goodness will guide us if love is inside us"... I rate it very highly, so it's not overrated at all, punks
