It's not just an American phenomenon. And Prince is actually helped on the charts by having an older audience. Those are the people who go out and buy CDs. That much-sought-after teen audience just downloads what they want. That's the reason so many older artists have seen a renaissance on the (album) charts the last few years. Sure every country has charts, but when you look across these forums, there does seem to be a particular U.S. obsession with them. If its not the chart position, its talk about all the different tracks that should be released to a million and one different chart type formats. We must have had at least ten threads discussing the progress (or lack) of Black Sweat in the U.S. The commercial side seems to have taken over! That's true, you're right about that. But that's probably because Prince hasn't had any chart action in other countries! If, in a few months, "Fury" or some other song is debuting in another country's top ten, there would be lots of threads on it. Heck, just from the Org I know that "Cinnamon Girl" just missed the UK top 40, and "Te Amo Corazon" went top 2 in Canada and top 5 (I think) in Ireland. Whenever fans from other countries have chart news to talk about, trust me, they will.

Personally, I would like to see him get a least a little commercial success just so that all those friends and relatives that have given me a hard time for oh so many years now, and have written him of as a long-gone has-been, can eat some humble pie and actually admit to me that “they like his new one”… (that was a long sentence) Other than that I couldn’t give a shit how much success he has commercially.

I really don't want him to go mainstream in sales terms. It will put an end to more intimate concerts like Hammersmith. It will be back to Wembley Arena again. .
