Prince "Can't Break new Ground" if i hear this again

Wow if I hear this again i think im gonna throw myself off a building. Its hard for PRINCE to break new ground when he has LAID the ground and PAVED it "umpteen" times, plain and simple. Prince is not an artist that needs to break ground, its the artists today or lack there of that should be Breaking new ground, or artists that have been around for years and have basically "phoned in" there records. I mean even when PRINCE tries to do something totally out of nowhere people still kick his ass for it, "The Rainbow Children" "News" "One Nite Alone" "the Truth" all were something Prince of yesterday wouldnt do, but where were the "Break new Ground" people when these records came out, asleep at the wheel as usual, and basically "phoning in" there reviews. Take 3121 for what it is, Prince's new CD, I just got the CD today and its just kicking my ass, Tracks like "3121" and "Love" could teach these Kids in RB today like Usher and Rihanna what R and B stands for, today it seems to stand for Routine and Boring. I look at each PRINCE record as his first, i dont compare, because when U compare u get stupid statements like "his best since LOVESEXY" or "Most Rock since Gold Experience" or "Prince breaks no new ground".

Yes.

I especially agree with this:

"I mean even when PRINCE tries to do something totally out of nowhere people still kick his ass for it, "The Rainbow Children" "News" "One Nite Alone" "the Truth" all were something Prince of yesterday wouldnt do, but where were the "Break new Ground" people when these records came out,..."

Dude. I think people really just wont him to break the (self imposed) glass ceiling, not just new ground. A lot of us are just frustrated. Prince has the musicianship to be a charttopper while also being the authentic freak of creative nature that we enjoy so much. Like you suggest, he can out-Usher Usher (usher him out!); make music that is as heady and socially relevant as Ani DiFranco (Partyup, as fresh as it was 26 years ago, ... sadly); as soulful as Sade, Erykah, Meshell, all rolled into one; more deliciouly fun and bubblegummy than Madonna or Michael; rockpoppy as U2, funky as James Brown, etc.

Why doesn't he just give us that one album, from the thousands of recorded songs he has in his vault, shut all the haters up; then go on making his esoteric stuff. Some would say that album was Emancipation, some Crystal Ball, SOTT ... Purple Rain or 1999; but I think we all need a little reminder every decade or so -- even those of us who love Lovesexy, Parade, Come, The Truch, TRC, etc. New rappers benefit from the daunting competition of survival of the fittest, everybody and their momma can rap; it's Darwinian bloodsport.

The digital age is ideal for one-hit wonders, they don't even need the pretense of trying to make whole cohesive or beautifully eclectic albums when there's no need to download the padding filler. Prince can make albums that make you take your thumb of the [>>] button, so we have higher expectations.

I understand the argument about PRINCE, but I think just the fact that we all differ in our opinions clearly show that Prince is so well rounded as an artist, his number one priority is to please himself and not us. Sure he wants to challenge us as he has clealy said before, and i feel he does that. I mean just look at the opinions from fans and how they differ, i dont think amongst the Prince fans there is a Favorite or Best album or song or video or tour. Clearly showing his "breaking ground", the glass ceiling spoken of is actually the bar that Prince critics have raised to a height of no other artist. I mean lets be serious if i wanted to name artists and how they need to "break ground", lets take 2005's artist of the year Mariah, wow, could she finally do a Jazzy record, to showcase her voice and talent, no way, why, Cant Break new ground, fear of attempting it. I have never seen fear in PRINCE ever, i think the only time when I felt he was "off" a little was RAVE, only certain tracks where i felt he was trying to be someone he wasnt, someone who wasnt breaking new ground.

I think there is no answer, Personally I love 3121, some hate it, some feel the same, thats the way it goes. I loved Chaos and Disorder, Groundbreaking in my mind, but some people feel he phoned it in, oh well thats life.

Because he'd end up releasing something like "All My Dreams" on the CD and we'd have an ever wider divide between the "Love it" and "Hate it" camps...lol lol

I think it's time we give up this romantic myth that Prince has the album to end all albums tucked away somewhere in his vault if "he would just release it"...

I reckon, given the diverse nature of his body of work, and the volume of it, that Prince has pretty much broken all the ground he's capable of.

lastdecember has an attitude we should all try to have: see each album individually. To compare his work in 2006 to his work in 1986 is pretty pointless. We should try to see each album for what it is, and decide whether we like it or not, rather than waiting for the next Sign O' The Times/Purple Rain/1999 etc.

If Prince's direction and sound aint what you're looking for now, fair enough. Just don't slate a new album cos it's different from his old stuff. No artist around as long as Prince sounds the same as they did when they started. I reckon we'd have been bored a long time ago if every album sounded like Purple Rain.

Hey, this is just my opinion, reading over it I kinda sound a little preachy. Apologies for that. I just agree wholeheartedly with lastdecember.
So look into the mirror, do u recognise some1? Is it who u always hoped u would become, when u were young?

I dunno - There's been a lot of these types of threads... I think it might come down to what the listner looks for in music - Some people like to hear nice music, others like to hear something they might not have heard before, or something that pushes or expands them, as a listener, or pushes the artist they're listening to.

When I hear something like 'Satisfied', it might be a well constructed example of the genre, but Prince has done this kind of thing so much, I just think 'What was the point in doing another one?'... Too cookie-cutter for me.

Clearly everyone is different. smile

How much can we honestly and sincerely say that Prince has pushed and expanded us, or given us something we have not heard before, though??...

First of all, who can "break new ground" these days? Anyone out there (beside those who might be in deep independent obscurity) creating something new and "never heard before"??? eek Look at a band like Coldplay - praised to death but nothing else than a radio-friendly poppy version of Radiohead. Kaiser Chiefs - paint-by-numbers Brit pop-rock. Don't even get me on R&B - the last proper trend in that genre was the whole neo soul stuff imo, but that was more retro than "breaking new ground".

That said, why should Prince "break new ground"? He did that years ago and has probably created more refreshing sounds and ideas other people followed than most pop folks during their entire lifetime. If 25-year old people fail to come up with something new, why should it be the duty of an almost 48-year old who already has his merits concerning the development of pop music?

And then, what could he do that he hasn't done before? Rock album - been there. Same for acoustic album, piano album, instrumental album, jazz/fusion album, concept album. We already had 2- and 3-disc albums by the purple one, and a vault and a live album (though you can't have enough of both for Prince imo). The only non-covered ground for Prince would be Heavy Metal, Techno and Country, and I'm not 100 % sure if I really want him to try that. biggrin

I fail to see how other musicians shortcomings somehow excuse Prince for his.

this is just another example of a delusional Prince fan who believes he can do now wrong and is beyond criticism. so sad.

And there you've got the problem. Just because someone doesn't follow a certain criticism of Prince, it doesn't mean that that person is in the fam-ish mindstate you describe. I agree with the original poster, and I do criticise Prince. Just because someone doesn't share your views doesn't make that person a fanatic.

That's a weak retort...even for someone named "dumbass"...lol wink

It doesn't "excuse" Prince, but it does explain why it's a bit ridiculous to expect him to, as well as to fault him when he doesn't.
