Studio Retirement

In April of 1993, Pince announced his retirement from the studio and proclaimed that Warner Bros. would only get songs from the vault.

Was this actually the case? It seems that the material that would eventually become Come, TGE, and Chaos and Disorder was mostly recorded in 1993. Even side projects such as The Undertaker and the Dawn came from that year, right?

Were the songs that were saved for Emancipation, virtually the only known studio recordings from '94, '95, and '96?

Apart from material that was recorded after 1993 that featured or was recorded with the potential to be included on Come, The Gold Experience and Chaos and Disorder, other material from this 1994-6 period surfaced on albums such as Crystal Ball, The Truth, Kamasutra, Child Of The Sun, Exodus, Girl 6, and The Vault ... Old Friends 4 Sale, for example. Other material remains unreleased.

(It could be argued that WB was getting material from the vault from this period because Prince would record it and immediately put it in there).

There was an excellent thread in this forum that discussed the recording sessions for Come and The Gold Experience. Allegedly there were "Prince" songs recorded after the July 1993 name change, as well as " prince " tracks that were actually recorded before he started using the symbol as his name.

One example: "Endorphinmachine" was supposedly on an proposed tracklist for Come, which was always intended to be a "Prince" album. Yet in the end, it appeared on TGE, which was always planned to be an album by " prince ." Yes, a new version of "Endorphinmachine" (with the infamous cowbell) was swapped in at the last minute, but there's plenty of evidence to suggest that he intended to use the original version on TGE.

Would you happen to have the link to the thread you mentioned? This is one of my favorite and most fascinatng Prince periods. There seemed to be so much quality material recorded in a relatively short time. With all the politcs involved, I'm interested in what slipped through the cracks, much like the Crystal Ball recordngs.

Also, what year was The Tora Tora Exprience recoorded and is anything known about those songs?

Not at the moment. I'd go look for it, but I'll bet somebody has it handy. Anyone?
