Look, people who get all religious later on in life are clearly making up for some corrupt shit they done. It's your basic balancing mechanism taking effect. You live a life of debauchery and indulgence, and sooner or later your body and mind will snap and crave discipline and devotion to something.

Thing is, we are ALL undisciplined and indulgent in some way, be it drugs, food, sex, games, posting self-important rants on online message boards like me, and we're constantly balancing ourselves out.

Some people's indulgences are more visible, more unsavory than others. But let's not be too harsh in our judgments. Prince has got his skeletons, MJ, you, me, your neighbor, everyone.

I believe people WANT to be good. We struggle to find some model, some method, some magic to make it happen for us, but what we see in the world are mostly cheap compromises and self interest and it slowly beats our idealism to ruin.

We look to celebrities and artists and and mystics of antiquity for some clue. That's what being a fan is all about. Preserving the hope that there are people worth looking up to, people who have lived through the shit and gleaned some insight into life, and maybe one day we can get there too.
