What the F was prince thinking thread. your top 5. List 5 of your "What the F was prince thinking".
1. Putting a cheese remix of Rave unto song on the Rave extended cd, knowing dang well this guy has a really long version of the actual song. 2. Lovesexy front cover 3. That rap stuff on Diamonds and Pearls 4. Fabricating the entire Crystal Ball set (3cd) with most stuff the fans were'nt looking for. 5. Not letting Trent Rezner work with him. This includes remixes or actually collaboration.

rather than reveal the reasons for the name change because of WB owning the name "prince" till 99, make up a crazy story about being told by god and changing it to a symbol. "the christ" tony m "god told me in a dream not to release the black album" the whole/slave WB fight... good intentions, but he completely shot his foot off in the process Power tends to corrupt; absolute power corrupts absolutely. - Lord Acton

2. Tamar 3. Going horn-crazy after 'Purple Rain' 4. 1999: The New Master 5. Quitting with the 90's hip-hop sound...

1) "1999 The New Master"... Enough said.
2) Changing his name to . Looking back it may have seemed like a cool idea at the time, but no matter how you cut it, it really hurt him in the long run. The hardcore fans stayed with him, but it wasn't until 2004 until he really began to get his reputation back among the mainstream audience. 3) Not releasing "Housequake" as a single and not touring the US with the SOTT tour. A missed opportunity. 4) Releasing "The Greatest Romance" as the lead single from Rave. A great song, but I don't think the line "You're body was designed to respond to mine despite of you're desire to mold me" really captured the mainstream. "So Far So Pleased" would have been a much better choice imo. 5) Releasing the Black Album in 1994. Not only did most of his fans already have it, but it totally killed the mystique/cult following that the album had gained Toejam @ Peach & Black Podcast: http://peachandblack.podbean.com

2) Prince album cover, prince surely thought "No one could buy this record infront of there friends with out being embarrassed" 3) Lovesign video 4) No turning up for live 8 5) The undertaker video "wtf" !!!! Keenmeister

1) The attitude/presentation of the "Contractual Obligation" albums of the '90's. Prince did not forsee the damage to his critical reputation & popularity by releasing a series of chintsy albums that was tatamount to near-career suicide. Arguably, he has never recovered.
2) The a-hole remarks that taint "One Nite Alone Live" "Is it better to give or recieve?" "To give". Then give up your seat to that person in the back"!) ("Are you a leader or a follower?" "A leader." "Too bad!") (I'm talking about THEOCRATIC ORDER! Are you with me tonight!?!?") (Miss-I just want to say:Crack Kills!) (Don't you know dead blood kills interferons!?").....say what? He comes off as a jerk. 3) The album cover and dvd cover of "Rave" and "Rave 2000" 4) When he started re-recording all his Warner albums 5) Putting Roadhouse Garden on the back-burner and releasing Newpower Soul instead. What a miscalculation of worthy releases. ***I agree with many of the other comments too.

1) Announcing that goddamn samples box and never releasing it.
2) Announcing Roadhouse Garden and millions of other projects and never releasing them. 3) Almost releasing the Black Album but then not doing so. 4) Re-recording and almost releasing his WB albums again but then not doing so. 5) Releasing Graffiti Bridge, Rave, Chaos, Crystal Ball, Emancicraption, NPS, Kamaqueefra, etc. etc. etc. instead. What the F was Prince thinking when...
1. He released "Betcha By Golly Wow" as the first single from his 3-cd album of mostly original material, "Emancipation". 2. He complained that Warner wouldn't release his music as fast as he could pump it out, yet when he was with them he released 1 album per year, and since then it's pretty much been a new album every 2 years. 3. He let Tony M take up an entire song on D&P--"Jughead". 4. He performed "Dolphin" on David Letterman months before "The Gold Experience was released. 5. He released "Musicology"...(with that album cover!) Even though he obviously did something right because the album was his big comeback!

3) Almost releasing the Black Album but then not doing so. [Edited 3/16/06 20:09pm] "BLACK ALBUM" has not aged well and is inferior to "Lovesexy" to me; however, "Black Album" was the PERFECT album set to release at the PERFECT time; so dark and so soon after the mammoth SOTT....if he had released it, then released "Lovesexy" soon after that, the Prince legend/myth would be amazing.... unfortunately, as things did unfold in 87-88, that time is often regarded as the end of Prince's "rein"...

1.) "Gold Nigga," one of the worst pieces of crappola in music history.
2.) Signing a contract with Warner Bros. and then backing out of it. 3.) Larry Graham. 4.) Breaking up the Revolution. 5.) Signing and producing less than mediocre talents (i.e. Dale Bozzio, Carmen Electra, Mayte, Mazerati, and the NPG).

1. Releasing some of the singles he's released.
2. Turning his name into a symbol and writing "Slave" on his face. I do empathize with the frustration of not owning your own "masters," but c'mon! 3. Including far too much rap on D&P and . 4. The whole, "Mayte's father's name is this and my old manager's name was that and she can balance a sword on her head and I can balance a sword fighter on mine and we both love me so it must be fate" thing. 5. The inclusion of certain songs on NPS and Rave that wouldn't have passed muster as lukewarm outtakes, in the 80s. "She made me glad to be a man"

I have five more:
1.) Trying to go the Carlos Santana route on "Rave." All the guest artists and thinking Clive could do for him what he did for Santana was ridiculous. 2.) "Grafitti Bridge." This bullshit. Who told the homes that making a sequel to "Purple Rain" was a good idea? And 15 years later, I am still trying to figure just what is around the corner? 3.) The Militant Era. The whole "slave" shit was unnecessary. You can't compare being bound to a contract to being a slave. He had a choice to sign that deal or walk. Now all of a sudden he was all over TV and in the press sympathizing with Black folks and trying to convince people how "down" he was. 4.) NPGMC. Okay, now you have the means to release the music in a way you think it should, where is it? And what was with the $99 price tag? Why take orders for "Crystal Ball" and folks copped it in Best Buy before they got it in their mailbox? I would think by now it would be so much music in the NPGMC that I would've burned through umpteen hardrives trying to download it all. 5.) Signing to a major label. I still don't get it. One minute, you're waging war against the major labels and the next, you've signed to 'em. Since the release from WB, there has been deals with Arista, Sony, and now Universal. What gives?
