Song, Dirty Mind is overrated. Just listen to the keyboard line and the bump, bump rythem, very robotic, if you ask me, not that you did. This song has little or no groove and its lack of a hook is real middling. The song is cold, as to remain frozen in time. Maybe, that is best, for this.
He just sings the lines, like he is reading off the teleprompter, like at some hightech church. The song doesn't flow, like most funk, soul should. It is not alive in the amazing way that When You Were Mine is. This song just goes nowhere fast, and is not as dirty as it could have been. With a title that blantant, you better as hell put out. Just my thoughts. All you others say Hell Yea!!

I disagree. I think the arrangement of the song is great. It also makes you think of Prince as very sexy, freaky, mysterious, curious, unique, and dirty (in a most provocative way). I loved how the beat slowed down at the end.

Blame Dr. Fink too he was the one who helped contribute to the keyboard line.
I just kidding. I dont think Dirty Mind is overrated. I love that song and that song still makes me dance.

What in the hell do you know about funk? I saw that Roger/Zapp-KennyG nonsense you posted. You wouldn't know funk if George Clinton was sitting on your head!

I don't think anything about Dirty Mind is overrated..
in fact, it should be in the top 50 greatest albums of all time.

I just think this song sounds quite dated, and has lost what was prob so special about it in the 80's!
I still reckon its a good song, just not one of his greatest! Keenmeister

Nah... Dirty Mind was a one-of-a-kind song when it came out and I think it still sounds great. That pulse-like electro beat and all that sexual tension wrapped in a funknewwavepunkish envelope... it was new and you felt a real energy coming from it. Today the song does not sound "dated" -- it may not be contemporary but it's not an 80's chestnut like some big hits of the period.

I think the weak part of the song is the lyrics. They're probably the lamest lyrics he's ever sung. Everything else is fine. Don't hurt me, I'm a newb. I'm supposed to be stupid.

Dirty Mind is punk. You replace that keyboard pounding with a guitar and youve got you a punk song. Its brilliant, cos its still funky, and if you cant dance to that, you may as well sit it out for the rest of the album too, and that is saying something.

Not one of my favorite songs from that record.
My main complaint: his falsetto sounds to thin too convince. Other complaints: - the melody reminds me of AOR-rock (puke!) - the rhythem is way too simple to keep my attention I once read that a critic said: 'Princes music is underdeveloped'. That is certainly the case with this song in my opinion. In general i think the Dirty Mind album is a bit overrated. The buzz it created around the time of release was probably more a result of the lyrical then the musical content. When i read *****-stars reviews of this record i always think: what? Its just a first attempt of Prince to follow his own musical and lyrical muse a bit more, dont exegarete, I mean this is a record like U2's Boy or REM's Reckoning in my opinion: artists trying to find out what is their message and style, artists who are still developing their own sound. To me Prince fleshed out this sound with 1999 and Purple Rain, Dirty Mind was the blueprint for it, but its proof of an artist still looking for his sound, and not a masterpiece (as some musical critics seem to label it).
