I don't like any of those "better" as such, although I do enjoy D'Angelo's "SAIMH" in it's own right.

You forgot the main one in Chaka Khan "I Feel 4 U", she makes the song her own in many ways although I probably groove off the original more.

Prince's "The beautiful Ones" vs. Mariah's

Never heard Mariah's (it's probably better that way)..so Prince

D'Angelo's "She's Always In My Hair" vs. Prince's

I have always LOVED this song. D'Angelo did it justice but Prince (sentimental value)

Prince's "When Doves Cry" vs. Ginuwine's (I don't have to guess this one)

Prince..nuff said

LaToya Jackson's "Private Joy" and "1999" vs. P's

See Above

Rebbie Jackson's "I Feel For You," Chaka Khan"'s "I Feel For You" vs. P's

I love Chaka Khan. I'll have to go with her on this one.

Meli'sa Morgan's "Do Me Baby" vs. P's

Prince:D

TLC's "If I Was Your Girlfriend" vs. P's

Hard. I love TLC. They did it justice, but alas Prince.

Tevin Campbell's "Shhh" vs. P's

No contest, Prince all the way

Sinead O'Connor's "Nothing Compares To You" vs. P's with Rosie

I have a personal beef with this one. evil My husband thinks that this version is better. I don't. Not after she badmouthed Prince after this song became a hit for her. So again, Prince.

Jordan Knight's "ICNTTPOYM," The Goo Goo Dolls "ICNTTPOYM" vs. P's

Prince all the way.

Alicia Keys "How Come You Don't Call Me" vs. Prince's "How Come You Don't Call Me Anymore?"

Nice attempt, but Prince.

TLC's "Get It Up" vs. The Time's "Get It Up"

Ok, I'll cop to TLC on this one since you asked for honesty. smile

Tell, tell. I know there's somebody who likes the remakes better. I'm not one of them

oh, I forgot Tom Jones' "Kiss" vs. P's

How could you forget this one lol? I always try to.

From the ones I've have heard on your list I like:

Chaka Khan's 'I feel for you'

Sinead O' Connor's 'Nothin' compares to you'

Prince's 'Kiss'.

I do really like Mariah Carey's 'the beautiful one's' but Prince's version is just more powerful (nobody can do it like Prince especially in this song). I also like Alicia Keye's 'How come you don't call me anymore' but I like how Prince's ends it better. Despite it all, all of these artists doing these songs over really sound like they're trying to imitate Prince's originality.

But I guess it all goes with the times too. If you grew up listening to a lot of Prince's songs, you might like them better because they have more meaning to you. It goes with the times, just hearing Prince's version of 'the beautiful ones' you can tell that era is written all over it also, as it can also take you back to the Purple Rain days, just as if you heard Prince's 'I feel for you' and 'How come you don't call me anymore' do also. But because I do like hip-hop, and a touch of it is added on to the 'remakes' like Alicia Keye's remake of 'How come you don't call me anymore' it helps me to relate to it a little more, but not anymore than the lyrics do alone anyway.

I've yet to hear the others, but not anxious too:)

My bad.

Chaka Khan and Sinead O'Connor made the most worthy cover versions of Prince songs I'd say.

The rest vary from enjoyable (D'Angelo & TLC) to sacrilege (Ginuwine, Tom Jones, Mariah, Jordan Knight...).

You forgot Stephanie Mills' cover of "HCUDCMA" then. Much better than Alcia Keys' but not touching the original.

I can honestly say angel, I knew Meli'sa Morgan's version of "Do me Baby" way...before I realized Prince ever wrote it or sang it. redface wink love

I love both. love Although coming from a girl wink, it seems more appropriate for me to like Meli'sa singing it. love wink I feel Meli'sa covers it extremely well, it's been a personal favorite for years... smile

Brings back those good o'l memories. wink love

As for the rest... I truly enjoyed Sinead's cover on "Nothing Compares 2 U".

And for TLC love, I really and truly enjoyed listening to this trio (as well as "live" performances) big grin, as well as their cover on "If I Was Your Girlfriend", and "Get it Up".

The rest undoubtedly (my personal opinion wink)... goes to Prince. love

I think since we're probably all die-hard Prince fans, most of us are just a little biased towards Prince's version of his own songs. So I think another question to ask would probably be:

Which do you like better:

Prince's "I Can't Make you love me" or Bonnie Raitt's

Prince's "Betcha By Golly Wow" or the Stylistic's

Prince's "A Case of You" or Joni Mitchell's

Prince's "La, La, La Means I Love U" or the Delfonic's

Prince's "Just My Imagination" or The Temptation's

Prince's "One of Us" or Joan Osborne's

I think it get's a little tougher when you try to determine if Prince's cover of someone else's song is actually better than the original.

Bonnie has the definitive version.

Prince's "Betcha By Golly Wow" or the Stylistic's

I never liked the song to begin with, but I'd take the Stylistics' version. I don't think Prince has ever done a cover justice - outside of a live performance, until...

Prince's "A Case of You" or Joni Mitchell's

...this one. It's a little shorter than Joni's original, but I dig Prince's Gospel-tinged vocals on his version better.

Prince's "La, La, La Means I Love U" or the Delfonic's

I don't like any of the covers on Emancipation.

Prince's "Just My Imagination" or The Temptation's

Ummm, THIS is an outright SMOKER! The Temp's version is good, but Prince's live version makes you sit up and take notice, because he reinvented it. The guitar playing is mesmerizing, Prince was absolutely CHANNELING some transcendent spirit.

Prince's "One of Us" or Joan Osborne's

Never liked the song, Prince did nothing for it.

I think it get's a little tougher when you try to determine if Prince's cover of someone else's song is actually better than the original.

Maybe for some, not for me. But among the songs others have covered by Prince - I can only think of 3 on the original post of this thread I like better than Prince's versions. It's difficult to make a more definitive version of a song by covering it, the way that Aretha did with Otis Redding's "Respect".

I honestly do like JordanKnight's "I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man" because it's slow and completely different. He's not trying to imitate. I appreciated it...but Prince's style and tempo make more sense with the lyrics, he's just lookin for a good time and the music makes you feel like having a good time. You don't think about how sad the story truly is. Jordan's makes you feel how sad it really is.It's a little depressing

Funny you should mention that. Personally, I think Knight's version conveyed the emotion more closely to the lyrical content, whereas with the original I never feel the lyrics in my gut, because it's uptempo and poppy. But since Knight was part of New Kids On The Block anything he touches comes along with that stigma.

I think Chaka's version of I feel 4 u is wick! She had a couple of years to think about what to do with it, but I love driving around with that tune pumping, really makes my day...Sinead's version of Nothing compares 2 u is great and the whole crying in the video really emphasises the meaning of the song
The TLC version of Girlfriend does the original little justice same with Alicia's how come...and P's Shhh was better too!

Never heard D'Angelo's version

Prince's "When Doves Cry" vs. Ginuwine's (I don't have to guess this one)

Genuwine's version stunk...I couldn't believe Prince gave him permission to butcher that song

LaToya Jackson's "Private Joy" and "1999" vs. P's

Never heard her versions and probably never will

Rebbie Jackson's "I Feel For You," Chaka Khan"'s "I Feel For You" vs. P's

Didn't know Rebbie did a cover for I Feel For You, but I love Chaka's version more than Prince's

Meli'sa Morgan's "Do Me Baby" vs. P's

Love Prince's version, but Meli'sa did the song justice

TLC's "If I Was Your Girlfriend" vs. P's

This comes pretty close to a draw for me...I love P's version...but I like the little bit of funk that TLC put into it

Tevin Campbell's "Shhh" vs. P's

Tevin's version was OK...but Prince's version was much better

Sinead O'Connor's "Nothing Compares To You" vs. P's with Rosie

This is difficult because Sinead put raw emotion into this song, her voice carried it to another level and made it #1.
I love Prince & Rosie's version too...draw

Jordan Knight's "ICNTTPOYM," The Goo Goo Dolls "ICNTTPOYM" vs. P's

I couldn't stand Jordan Knight's version, but would like to hear the Goo Goo dolls cover

Alicia Keys "How Come You Don't Call Me" vs. Prince's "How Come You Don't Call Me Anymore?"

I like Alicia's remake, but it doesn't hold a candle to the original imo.

TLC's "Get It Up" vs. The Time's "Get It Up"

Dang! TLC knew how to do the Minneapolis sound their way.
Wish they could've done a tribute album

Tell, tell. I know there's somebody who likes the remakes better. I'm not one of them

oh, I forgot Tom Jones' "Kiss" vs. P's

Tom Jones version was quirky, but I liked it. Prince's is my favorite...wish there was a way to hear Mazarati's version before they threw it away...

Especially Prince's reworking of his own song - too over the top.

Actually, I agree with you. But that's probably because I heard The Family's version before I heard any other version, which may make me a little more biased than others who only heard The Family's version well after Sinead's and Prince's (w/Rosie Gaines) version was released. It's also probably worth noting that since The Family was essentially a Prince "side project", the Family's version is probably exactly the way Prince wanted the song to sound even if an earlier demo was different.
The simplicity of The Family's version cuts deep. It's very "true". It feels almost like the arrangement for the song is being made up on the spot based simply on the way the composer was feeling at the time.

One of the reasons why I think a lot of people like Sinead's version better is because of the video which in itself is a very powerful statement. Whenever someone mentions her version of the song, the first thing that comes to mind for me is the video (seeing her big bald head and tears), not the song. While I do think Sinead's version is great, I also think the video is what carried the song and made it so popular.

Not to get off the subject, but to give you an example of what I mean, there were a lot of what I would say are non-Prince fans who loved "Pink Cashmere". But "Pink Cashmere" never had a video and therefore never gained too much popularity even though when people heard it they said "ewww, I like that song!" So I think Sinead's "Nothing Compares 2 U" was great, but the video is what really carried it over the top. Whereas The Family's version is simply beautiful in it's own right with nothing to carry it accept the lyrics and the way it was performed.

In my opinion the originals are always better than the remakes when the original has been written by the performer. When someone writes a song (and also has the talent to sing it) you get the full emotion behind the original meaning. No matter how much someone can relate to a particular song they can never sing it with the true passion the writer originally intended it to have. This of course does not apply to songs written "for" another artist to sing since all song writers aren't gifted to also sing the poetry they create.

All of that said...I prefer P's originals to the remakes and the originals to P's remakes. Don't get me wrong...he's done most of the songs justice as many artists have done his songs justice but when it comes down to it, the original versions win hands down.
