There's absolutely no hint of paranoia on this record, it's the epitome of bliss and contentedness. All his dreams had come true. He was just revelling in becoming 'Prince', his idealised self, the biggest music star in the world. Every colour and sound must have seemed so bright and vivid and fresh and open to experimentation to his new free eyes. The wee man's dreams didn't get dark until around late 1986, according to my Guessomemeter. That's when the fear came. [Edited 3/14/06 16:03pm]

i see it all as idealization - prince obsessed with colors and new sounds, being introduced to all kinds of new music and being free to do whatever he wanted after the success of purple rain. i still think it's an amazing album as a whole, even if i'm not keen on a couple of the songs on there.

At that stage in his life he was on a quest for a power in music. I think it is one of his more briliant attempts. News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so. You have those internalized issues because you want to, you like to, stop.

Maybe you just get paranoid about it because it IS so happy and genuine, maybe you just cant believe that...?
The only druggy feel I get is comparing the cover to Sgt Pepper, but aside from that I think its clean!

No, seriously, I like that appraisal of that era very much.
