3121 - Lolita

Is it me or does this song sound like it should have been a Time song?

You're right, it could have easily been a Time song. But Prince pretty much started and influenced the Time...

Besides, it's kind of fun hearing his 'homage' to Morris Day at the end with that call to the fellas and Lolita...

Love the track!! Love ALL the tracks! I actually dance around my apartment listening to a Prince album again... biggrin

Lolita is the only track I can´t stand on this album, and for sure not because of the call to the fellas á la The Time...it´s the lyrics and the music that don´t really do much for me. In fact I have a hard time believing that Prince actually wrote this...then again, he also wrote I Like Funky Music, Jughead and We Gets Up, so there you go.

Other than that the album is quite enjoyable (well, let´s not get into Satisfied...also not my cup of tea, but others loathe Incense And Candles, which I like, so different strokes for different folks). wink

It indeed has some classic Time elements....but that still doesn´t make it more enjoyable for me.

The rest kinda hits hard though.

I wish I had this many "co-signers" when I bought my last car...wink

But seriously...I couldn't agree more!! For me, "Lolita" does a terrific job at helping to keep things a little "fun" and "light" on the record...instead of dark and mysterious. I think that's one of the problems in the masses interpreting P's music. People tend to approach it too seriously...instead of taking every tune for what it's worth. And, for me..."Lolita" is FUN!!! smile

Also, I firmly believe the familiarity in the song ("Soft & Wet" anyone?) is done intentionally...sort of a "Prince 101" course for the newer fans. Us "OG's" already have our degrees from that school...

I've said B4 that I thought it was the worst song on 3121, but it's growing on me quite a bit. May still be the worst song on 3121 for me, but I'm startin' to actually dig it!

They're SUPPOSED to be corny! Fuck! That's the fucking POINT! Grow a fucking ironic intellect. Man, I don't mean to be nasty, but you really don't get it, do you?

A common problem with prolific song writers is that after writing so many songs, original and creative lyrics become very rare.

Although I don't agree with your delivery of the point, I do agree with the point itself.

"Lolita" is intentionally cheesy, and is in no way meant to be any deeper then a puddle. That's the charm of the song actually...and in my opinion wouldn't work with more "intense" lyrics.

Enjoy the song for what it is supposed to be! Light hearted and fun...nothing more, nothing less!!

Common, of course.

Try writing a few thousand songs and see how easy it is to keep the lyrics fresh and interesting.
