I Love word mostly because I'm a dancer and the ending is so great to dance off of. and The Word had me hooked on first listen.

these are the best couple of songs he's given us in years. i am astounded. i never thought i'd find myself playing a new prince song to death ever again. but 'love', 'word' and 'lolita' are KILLING me.

just one thing about 'the word': he hasn't written a song with this much space, air and breath in it for a looooong time. spooky vocals full of conviction and passion - and the production is beautiful. so much presence and movement - listen on headphones.

a genuine minimalist prince spine-tingler.

Love... reminds me of "I dig U better dead" which at this time made me think about MJ...

The word... a kind of 7 ?

Good songs anyway, even if the chorus 4 "love" is quite too much "happy" 4 me in comparison of the general sound of the song...

The Word is one of the better tracks on the album but it also is mangled with some terrible lyrics, preaching and dodgy vocal effects.

i say again, this song has much more presence and spine-tingly prince creepiness than we've been given in years.

btw, i do partly agree with the poster who said it reminds them of 'dig u better dead'. but to my ears, that song wears itself out after about 3 listens. it's prince trying too hard to return to this sort of skeletal creepiness. he's faking it on 'better dead'.
but on 'the word', it comes over niiiice. very good track which bears repeated listening.

Ok- after several days and thousands of listens - I still LOVE The Word!!
I think it is a keeper- in my book anyways!

maybe i am mad, but i really dont understand people comparing the Word to lovesexy material!

I mean, the tracks on lovesexy where all about complex arrangements, horns in different keys, complex music made bearable because all of the harmonies used.

The Word is just a throwaway dance-pop song, lacking originality, lacking an inspiring arrangement. I mean its of b-side quality. Open your ears.

I was just commenting on someone who said that song could fit on Lovesexy, while in my opinion it is really different from the material on that cd.
