Sister (Dirty Mind)

I love this song, but does anyone no anything about it?
Is there a deeper meaning to the song?

No wonder you're all alone
It's written all over your face
You're just-a rock hard in a funky place "

Nothing deep as far as I know, but I've thought before that the song doesn't glorify incest as so many claim, but shows how ugly it is. What goes on in the lyrics does not sound like there was consent on the protagonist's (Prince's?) part.

Incest is one of Romanticism's oldest themes.

Prince is a Romantic. So nothing surprising here.

There was a thread once that this song was all about drawing attention to incest victims. I disagree because even though Prince getting raped by his sister doesn't sound pleasurable, it's a very humorous song. If this were written for such a noble cause, it wouldn't be so humorous.

That said, it does demonstrate a certain inequality between himself and a woman... for the rest of his career, he had some woman he was looking up to in his art to be his double or his savior.

His sister is literally his double in age, in the song, and has the ability to put him out on the street. It's an interesting contrast to the later image of him and Mayte, and his feeling that she was his twin from a previous life.

Oh. Well at least you have a valid reason. I made a thread asking what a song was about, I forget what it was, and everybody was trying to get a philosophical on me for no reason when it wasn't even that serious.

Ah well, I like those kind of threads, actually! biggrin I can test my theories against them, and get into interesting debates. I get a lot of inspiration from around here (and credit prince.org, incidentally, on my papers!)

Yeah, but it's kind of hard to explain and I just end up sounding silly. It has to be experienced. lol

I don't see the song as humourous. The melody is goofy enough alright, but lyrically there's no funny.

It's hard to say what, if anything, Prince meant by this song. But I just don't think it's meant to sing the praises of incest.

In short, Prince is crazy.

j/k razz

It's interesting alright. One could do a hell of a psychological profile on the guy. Wasn't he seeing a therapist/psychologist sometime in the 90's?

Exactly. Per Nilsen's view from the DMSR book has quite widely spread inside the fanbase and I don't think it's a valid view at all.

It's hard to say what is meant by the song. It's sorta humourous, but at the same time it's very much not.

Like everything else, only Prince knows for sure, and he ain't telling.
