Who wrote the songs on 'New Power Soul'..?? I've always wondered if it was ever officially confirmed that Prince wrote the songs on 'New Power Soul'. The album credits all songs to The NPG, but many reviews claim Prince himself wrote them; can anyone help me with this one?

I think it's kind of obvious that Prince wrote most of the songs. However he gave credit to the NPG because many of the songs were inspired by the band he used on the Jam Of The Year Tour (eg. Push It Up is derived from the live version of Jam Of The Year).
It's strange in the sense that the other NPG albums feautre different lead vocalists (Tony M and Sonny T) and were promoted as being "separate" from Prince/. However New Power Soul was promoted very much as being a Prince/ album. He sings lead on all the tracks and his face dominates the album cover. I consider it as much a regualar Prince album as any other. Toejam @ Peach & Black Podcast: http://peachandblack.podbean.com

At the time, I also recall that one of Prince's press people issued a small announcement that a new Prince album would soon be released. A short while after that, a new announcement was made that it WASN'T a Prince album but one by the NPG. I've often wondered if he originally did intend for this to be a "Prince" album but changed his mind at the last minute. This would account for the fact that he sings lead on everything and has his face plastered on it. Plus, the video for The One is all Prince and Mayte.
