I've mentioned on here before about how many female fans totally flipped out when P released Dirty Mind. They tripped off of his new image, and his new wave type sound. When he came out with Controversy, it wasn't anymore tripping from fans. And with 1999, he had them right where he wanted them.

I remember the females going wild over "Still Waiting" the year before. Then he hooked them again a year after "Dirty Mind" with "Do Me, Baby" and "Girl" by The Time. After that was "International Lover" and "Free". You know how women love their slow jams and "Dirty Mind" only had "Gotta Broken Heart Again" which didn't get any radio airplay.

Actually, he could have put another slow jam on "Dirty Mind" because the album was only about 30 minutes and albums held about 40 to 45 minutes. I never really noticed many of them complaining though. Of course, I knew some females that liked to throwdown. Hmmm....I wonder if Hotlegs was in my area. lol

I do remember the female fans. Especially during "How Come You Don't Call Me Anymoe" live. If you saw P live during that time women melted with his falsetto crooning. Ummm I think he probably lost a lot of male fans to his Dirty Mind image. It was a little girly for men to handle. I loved it though. I thought it was daring as fuck and the music was too good to ignore no matter what his image was. Controversy was kind of like Dirty Mind as far as the hype. I didn't really notice a difference. It was 1999 that really shook the world and let Prince showcase his talent. He really proved his genius during that summer nad his fan base did nothing but grow. Mtv was still fairly new and his videos were great for that record. 1999 and Little Red Corvette were nothing but Prince performing. His look was glittery and neon. People loved him. He couldn't do wrong. Then it just took off from there. It was such a trip back then. Everywhere you went you saw Prince in shop windows, on the radio, in peoples cars. I remember when the live "I Would Die 4 U" video came out while he was touring North America. Mtv played the video every hour on the hour for the whole weekend. It was so excellent. I honestly think that for a while after that that whenever Prince released a new video it was played every hour on the hour. He fucking ruled. I also remember when he was getting ready to release Parade that Mtv had some special where they did a very rare interview and he perfomed America. Prince didn't start losing fans until Lovesexy. I mean he probably lost a couple of fans when Around The World In A Day was releaseed just because it was such a different record than Purple Rain that I do remember a few people being really turned off, but for me he was growing and the music was fantastic. Prince loses a lot of fans these day because his music isn't that special anymore. I miss the old Prince.

She's doing fine. I saw her on the Rick James site about a month ago. She said she had to leave the org. I don't know why. Lots of people love her here.

STRAWBERRYRAIN

Well i would have to say I have been a prince fan since Purple rain. I was 12 than. I never heard of him befare that. I loved Purple Rain. I thought it was inovative and the loved the sound of his drums and synthzers he used. As i got heavier in to him. I bouhght his older albums such as controvery and dirty mind. I loved them both. I though Prince had his own raw style and truly loved him for that. I do not think Prince was a sell out for 1999 or Purple Rain. He just goes through many fazes in music and style ( it wouldnt be our Prince if he didnt). As a musicain myself you go through many changes inside yourself that bring out many facets of your own being. Music is a way Prince expresses himself and does it well. I love him for that and i hope he truly stays that way

I remember so many people complaining about the Around the World/Parade era on how psychadelic everything was and everyone wanted PR part 2.....(some still do??)

Now look, today many regard Parade as a classic! I cant see how anyone can rip a Prince release because all of it is a million times better than most of the crap out there and also there are gems on every single album.....of course some stronger than others but that is strictly a persons opinion.....the people I have no respect for are the fools that dismiss everything he does but they still claim to be FANS on here.....go away!

After being floored by "For You", the only thing I didn't get about the "Prince" album was his look! biggrin I didn't like the album all the way through, but I liked most of it. When "Controversy" and "Dirty Mind" came out--well this was all during my senior year in high school and freshman year in college and my friends and I found these two albums to be some of the best party music around. "1999" just continued the fascination--especially all the b-sides that came out (with the Electrifying Mojo playing them all!). I don't remember a lot of disappointment--just a lot of "gee, what is this guy going to do next?" I think a lot of people I hung around dropped some of their Prince interest during the "Diamonds and Pearl" era--although "Get Off" and "Diamonds and Pearls" were hits among the R and B crowd.

It's not about selling out or not selling out. It is about writing great songs, with amazing melodies. 3121 barely comes close.
All you others say Hell Yea!! woot!
