Lines for a newborn Hi, y'all
In a few weeks I'll become a father for the first time and I'd love to put some appropiate Prince-lyrics on the card The card being the announcement of birth we'll send to all our relatives and friends. Everytime I try to think of some lines though, I draw a blank .... It should be about four (short) lines long and not too religious but of course expressing our sentiment or wish for the newborn. So I figured I'd ask you guys. I'd be thankful for any suggestions you might have to offer. [Edited 3/12/06 15:48pm]

Congrats! If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

From "Let's Have a Baby":
So long have I gazed into your eyes Wonderin' what they'd look like on a newborn child I cannot lie when my hand is on your thighs I'm thinking, isn't it a miracle that life comes from inside? So long I have listened 2 your voice Wonderin' what it would sound like coming from a girl or a boy Isn't it funny that when U're truly in love How just the thought of such things can bring U so much joy?

Many Congratulations.
My Son was born January last year, He is my first child. Are you ready for the ride of your life? It is awesome....Don't blink !! At the end of the day when I had to go home and leave my Partner and Son at the Hospital I got in my car and put the CD player on, the first song to come on was Betcha By Golly Wow (I was listening to Emancipation) it was probably the most fitting tune at that moment in time. It is a tuff one though, I am sure someone here could find the words for you. Again, Congratulations.

"gregory looks just like a ghost..."

Um, leave Gregory out of this. And Betcha By Golly Wow seems inappropriate to me, for obvious reasons.
I'd say do this: do NOT use a Prince lyric and find something better. Using lyrics from popular artists is tacky and he hasn't written much that would sound fitting.

The reference to 'Betcha By Golly Wow' was from my own experience, I was just pointing out how it was for me on the day my Son was born. I do agree, using lyrics might not be the best thing to do. However, I am sure jodude will decide what to do soon enough !!

Hi y'all!
Thanks for all your suggestions so far! Brendan's suggestion are some lyrics I (of course) played for my pregnant partner in her early pregnancy, but somehow seems less appropiate for the baby. But thanks for the suggestion anyway, they are some of his most beautiful lyrics! Purpledisk, your experience with Betcha By Golly I can vividly imagine! And I'll try not to blink, I'm all buckled up! Your suggestion from Adore made me slap my forehead. How could I not think of them! And for Skippers suggestion from Diamond and Pearls, I'd never would have thought of it. They are beautiful too! I hope there are even more ideas out there, so we can think them over before deciding on which ones to use. The idea to use Prince's lyrics came from my partner. She knows how much his music touches me (and her too sometimes), so using appropiate lyrics from his songs actually would make it more personal card to us. Strange but true ....

Be my mirror lyrics work just fine at a moment like this. Walking alone in the dark, I see nothing u see
I can be in a park, or flying in the…in the deep sea I wish u’d hold my hand; then everything could b There’s nothing strange, we’re not deranged We only want everyday 2 b a Cosmic Day

If it's a girl:
Could U be the most beautiful girl in the world? It's plain 2 see U're the reason that God made a girl When the day turns into the last day of all time I can say I hope U are in these arms of mine And when the night falls before that day I will cry I will cry tears of joy cuz after U all one can do is die or for a boy, Mayte's version: Could U be the most beautiful boy in the world? It's plain 2 see U're the reason that God made a girl (I would change this line to 'boy' too) When the day turns into the last day of all time I can say I hope U are in these arms of mine And when the night falls before that day I will cry I will cry tears of joy cuz after U all one can do is die The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

I did a cd for the birth of my son, based mostly on prince songs, and the best one that I came up with was "Wherever U Go, Whatever U Do", the lyrics really sum up a lot of the protective care and hopes for the future that being a parent brings.
"just remember that I'll always be there for you...whatever you play, it's ok to lose, so long as you learn from every game you chose...you don't have to worry, i'm sure you'll be fine, if you stay happy then what's yours is mine" I'm guessing it was written for an ex, a la wish u heaven, but it does come across as paternal and passing on of life's lessons, which is apt.
