My Fair 3121 Revew

In one sentence, 3121 is good from top to bottom and will satisfy both casual and die-hard fans with Prince's usual display of his musicianship and creativity. However, is 3121 an "historic" release by Prince? I agree that this CD does grow on you and is clearly a really good CD, but this guy is the best musician ever in my opinion, so I'm not quick to say that this release rivals some of his masterpieces like Dirty Mind, Sign O the Times, Lovesexy, The Rainbow Children, etc. I think it does his body of work a big injustice when promoters classify almost everything he puts out as "classic" because by definition, that cannot be true.

If a comparison must be made I would say that this album is on par with Musicology or Rave and may slightly surpass those CD's after I listen to it a few more times. In my opinion, 3121 has 3 great songs: Fury, Black Sweat and maybe Lolita or Te Amo. The rest of the songs are very good and consistent. I will say that the distinguishing characterstic on this CD is that there is no song that is "bad" like "Life O the Party" was on Musiciology. Musicology had more great or good songs like Cinnamon Girl, Million Days, Man In Youre Life, Call My Name, Dear Mr. Man and Pimp, Illusion, . . . But, Musicology also had more mediocre or below average songs like Like O the Party, What do you want me to do and On the Couch. The same can be said about Rave. 3121 stays pretty consistent throughout. I do get the sense that the album is just a collection of catchy songs like Musicology and I'm looking forward to the next project that has an overall feel and focus like Around the World In a Day or The Rainbow Children.

Just my opinion and I'm sure it will change in a week or so after I digest the CD a little more.

Well anyone who thinks The Rainbow Children is a classic, I don't really care about your opinion anyway.

3121 isn't just some "collection of catchy songs." That's a shallow insight into the album.

There's clearly a theme of exploring the nature of temptation in a relationship. At first Prince is tempted by a woman and just wants to have his fun with her, but in the end, he finds his true happiness in the joy of spirituality.

The album never loses its spirited, fun attitude, but the theme is definitely there at the end.

The track sequencing on this album is simply perfect. Every song is exactly where it should be.

lol
Y'know, I honestly thought earlier today that the record was telling the story of a failed relationship with the protagonist finding true fulfillment in God at the end, but then thought, naaah. But, now, aye. Maybe. smile

It's definitely there.

3121--This is almost like the woman tempting him. "You can come, but you can never leave."

Lolita--A continuation of the temptation theme, with Prince standing up and declaring his intentions to resist.

Te Amo Corazon--Prince's romantic infatuation with the new woman.

Black Sweat--A double entendre about Prince giving into temptation.

Incense and Candles--The culmination of Prince and this woman coming together, sexually.

Love--Prince explaining his actions and realizing that he's responsible for what his relationship will be. It's up to him to shape what "love" truly is.

Satisfied--Prince fulfilling his desires with the woman he really loves.

Fury--The consequences Prince faces from his wife over his affair.

The Word--Prince looking to spirituality for a cure to his newfound torment.

Beautiful, Loved, and Blessed--Prince reveling in the new inner peace he's found.

The Dance--Prince coping with the fact that he can't always have what he wants. Things don't always turn out as you want, and it truly isn't fair. It just is.

Get on the Boat--A redeemed Prince wanting to spread the great word to his fellow man.

Like I said, the songs themselves don't necessarily tell part of the specific story, as they're frequently fun and lighthearted, but the sequencing certainly does.

And I gather The Dance is Prince, quite literally, saying life isn't fair?

Wait a moment, i really like What do u Want me 2 do? It´s so perfect 4 me

I love What do U want me 2 do? aswell. I agree with this review for the most part, the cd is very good, and its a grower, but i would say classic. i know most dont like TRC, but i love that lp. I like Musicology, and it was very good for the moment, but that moment left after the Musicology tour. 3121 top 2 bottom i think is better than Musicology, but the song that I'm not in2 like others are is the song 'Love', the word sounds like a not as good version of Annastesia, with an Emancipation era sounding remix. Fury sounds like a Hendrix demo, U know those Hendrix demos u all sit wishin he would have lived longer 2 master it, but its still fun non the less, but the song 4 me is 'The Dance'. 2 me The Dance has a very Parade feel 2 it, and its my fav prince song outside of anything from his 80s best work. Just the passion that song has, i dont think that passion has been on a Prince ballad since Adore. Lolita took a few listens 2 get use 2 the vocal melody, but grew on me. It sounds like the Neptunes trying 2 make an attempt at writing a keyboard line like soft n wet, but it works, it could have been a Time track for sure. Which is fun cause like most of we often say that we wish we could hear Princes demos of the Time tracks. 3121 kinda reminds me of a Black Album track, and sometimes reminds me of Scarlett Pussy with its Camille like vocals. Its a fun cd, Lolita is the jam, the singles are very good 2, but i already played them out, Incense and Candles is unexpected, but well done, and The Dance makes me feel like its 86 all over again.

Another thing, the cd is 2 short, what happen 2 the extended jams dammit? I miss my extended grooves. And he know there should be a phat bassline and some funky chicken pickin on the geetar on Black Sweat. But its still fun. Not the best, but still entertainin. Just my 2 cents.

Even with the hype about 3121, I'm still holding out for his ultimate album, which will come in a couple years. But 3121 will most likely rock the funk out the place harder than usual.

I guess the recurring theme in all of our reviews is that the CD is good from top to bottom but it does not compare with his "classic" material. We can all disagree on particular songs, but as a CD, I would put this one in the B plus category, which is a very positive review and means that it is head and shoulders above anything anyone else puts out there.

I like the Rainbow Children too, it has great tracks and my favourite is Muse 2 the Pharao, and i can not forget the spiritual LAst December, when i hear that song, i get the same feeling that i get when i hear Gold, my skin feels kind of cold. If we talk about 3121 i love almost all the songs, BlB, Incense And Candles, Love (Ithink it´s wonderful, 2day i was travelling to the university and the song after 2 hour was still pumping in my head), The Boat, Fury, Lolita ,
But i don´t like 3121, and Black Sweat i don´t get it. Even though it´s a wonderful album better than musicology, but i need more songs, i guess 15 would be better. adriancfernandez@hotmail.com From Argentina
